Check Engine Light after Filling-Up
Posted on 5/17/21 at 11:22 am

Anyone have an idea why a car's check engine light would repeatedly show after a fill-up, only to go away after burning roughly a quarter-tank of gas?
I've experienced this issue for a while, now. I've visited different gas stations and changed the fuel cap, to no avail...
The code is related to the oxygen sensor, but that's already been replaced.
We're talking about a 2013 Nissan Sentra, in this case.

Probably your gas cap seal.
ETA never mind. Looks like you checked that.

or are you filling up with the engine running?

What's the code that it's throwing?
Buy an OBII scanner tool or take it to AutoZone or a Napa where they will pull it for free.

Take off the gas cap and put back on. Will likely fix it.

Probably your motherboard for the O2 sensors.
That or you didnt replace all of your O2 sensors with the last repair.

What's the actual code? Some are for a sensor issue, other are for A/F out of range.

No, sir. If the gas cap was the issue, perhaps I should disconnect the battery to clear the trouble code...
It's not a terrible bother, but my sticker's due, soon.

gas cap is loose. Takes a few stop/start cycles to reset. Is there a missing gasket for the cap?

When you fill up, do you stop when it kicks off or do you keep squeezing the handle until it over flows?
Its a known issue that people that overflow their tank saturate the filter in the the neck of the tank.

It's P0420, if memory serves.

Is it a GM truck? Had that issue on my mom's Traverse. I forget the part, but it was a sensor right on top of the engine that cost $30 and was easy to replace. It was caused by topping off the tank repeatedly.

should add make, model, and year to the OP

Can you post the make and model of the vehicle and the code that you're getting?
Cars have multiple O2 sensors.

EVAP sensors or EVAP canister is/are all bad

That code could be hundreds of different things on most vehicles.

That's for the front O2 sensor and measures catalyst performance. Common when cars have off-road exhaust installed, a failed catalyst or shitty fuel that's not reacting properly.
Is it driving normally?
