World War II was a failure of leadership, not of soldiering. They were outmaneuvered in the Ardennes because of shitty generals (Charles Huntziger in particular) who couldn't see the obvious threat. Once the French actually fought the Germans head to head and in the open, they did fairly well against them. By that time, however, it was a lost cause and thus all of the fighting they did was for naught.

And in WWII they were run over, and around, by a completely superior force. They were pragmatic when it made sense to be so. I love jokes about French cowardice, but like many generalizations, they are overstated. The French Rifle for sale: Never been fired, but has been dropped twice.
