The 2021 NFL draft came and went, and after 259 picks, no player from a historically Black college and university was selected.

This came as a surprise. Players from HBCU programs — like North Carolina Central cornerback Bryan Mills — were projected to go in the later rounds of the draft, but had to settle for signing as undrafted free agents.

Washington Football Team advisor Doug Williams was not happy about that, according to the Washington Post.

quote:

Williams said, “It’s hard to believe that not one guy is worthy of being drafted,” said Washington Football Team senior adviser Doug Williams, a Grambling alum and the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. “That to me, that’s a travesty. Hopefully, we can fix it.”

quote:

Jackson State coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders expressed a similar sentiment Monday, sending out a message on Instagram saying players from HBCU programs were "NEGLECTED AND REJECTED."

That’s pretty silly. It’s clear all the lower league guys were effected by not having a season and not having a ton of info due to covid

Cry about it. I’m pretty sure plenty of black players were selected 1-259, IIRC.

Poor things. You shouldn't get drafted if you are not worthy.

The NFL has to consist of at least 70% black players yeah? Just proves these people will find racism anywhere

I saw people on twitter legit saying there is no difference in talent between P5 and HBCU and that it’s attributable to less exposure and funding for the programs

I'd bet big money these people never did anything competitive in their lives.

I’d laugh if the one HBCU player to be drafted was a white guy

Well then why didn’t Washington draft one?

Aren't there waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more black people who get drafted compared to white people in the NFL?

They fricking complain about everything I swear. It's all about race.

Deion Insta:

And we have the Audacity to Hate on one another while our kids are being NEGLECTED & REJECTED. I witnessed a multitude of kids that we played against that were more than qualified to be drafted. My prayers are that This won’t EVER happen again. Get yo knife out my back and fight with me not against me!

I'm just going to think they're trying to use this is a recruiting pitch for their league..

Simple solution, just have two drafts. Regular draft and HBCU draft.

Other than one player from Central Arkansas, which only played a fall season, the only FCS conference that had any players drafted was the Missouri Valley. And the two HBCU conferences are traditionally middle-tier at best FCS conferences.

It's obvious that this was entirely due to the FCS fall season being derailed due to COVID.

What? By banning black players from playing at the National powers?

Jerry Rice isn't walking through that door.

The need and relevance of HBCUs sportswise is sort of over.

You sound triggered by black people having an opinion.

I wish they could just be “silent” like they were in the good ole days, right?

If only there were a term to describe this behavior….
