Hypothetical for the 49ers. Jimmy G has a great year

So it’s been confirmed that Jimmy G will be the starter next year(at least to start the season). What happens if Jimmy G stays healthy, has a good statistical year, and they go to the NFC Championship or better. Where would that leave them with the whole Trey Lance thing, especially considering how much they gave up to get him? ... Edit NFC corrected to NFL.

If Trey Lance is any good, they will do the same thing KC did with Alex Smith/Patrick Mahomes

I like the way the Niners are handling the situation. If they are healthy and Jimmy G can stay within himself, they are a solid playoff team. Lance is one that has the potential to get them to a super bowl and win it, I just don’t see Jimmy being able to do that

It just seems like a harder sell to the fans though, Jimmy G has already won an NFC championship and is younger(I believe) and has more upside that Alex Smith at that time.

Jimmy G has his limitations, but he literally had a 10 point lead in the Super Bowl with 7 minutes to go in the game.
Trey Lance has never played a Power 5 college team. He could have more talent than Jimmy G, but that doesn't necessarily translate to NFL success.

well that's certainly one take on the situation

I mean he may not be right, but the 49ers obviously think he will give them a better chance at a Super Bowl at some point or they wouldn’t have given up so much to get him. But I just see it getting messy potentially , what if they were to win the Super Bowl next season ? There is no way you are pushing Jimmy G out of that door, so what does Lance sit for another year? He is young, but that rookie contract doesn’t last forever, and his potential trade value will go down with each year of not playing.

The Niners won it, not Jimmy specifically. The dude was mediocre during that playoff run. 2/3 TD/int ratio, 58% completion percentage, 75 QB rating. He averaged 142 yards per game

Then they get to trade him for a decent value

They’d likely still start Lance regardless, but it depends on what he looks like from a developmental standpoint. Worse case scenario you keep Jimmy G for another year, he’s still under contract for 2022

the NFL has nothing on the treacherous Missouri valley conference defenses

Jimmy G is a top 15 QB when healthy. They will ride him until the rookie is ready or as Jimmy G does, gets injured yet again.
Best case for 49ers is jimmy G is playing well, Lance is ready, and they trade him to a playoff contender for some solid draft capital.
No reason to trade him early and rush the rookie or jeopardize a playoff ready team.

Keep Lance.
Trade Jimmy G to the Steelers. CFF probably retires after this year.

Better off than today. They could commit to one and deal the other.
The thing they (and everyone else) need is a starting quarterback

The one season he could make it the full 16 games he put up 27 TDs to 13 INTs and less than 250 yards/game
If his performance this season is not exemplary (Top 5-7) and a cut above that baseline there's no reason to even consider deviating from the succession plan
He's more likely to miss half the season than to make the Pro Bowl - that is not an acceptable situation in which to go all-in

The key word in my previous post is to win the game. You can have a great team but when it comes down to the crunch time, you need a great quarterback.

Yep and in 2019 Jimmy G was tied for the NFL lead with four comeback wins in the last few minutes of the game.
He’s more than serviceable when healthy.

A big problem with the present NFL is even the middle tier quarterbacks get enough money to frick up the cap numbers.
Having a mid tier to below average quarterback means you spend half your dinner check on alcohol but get served Natural Light.
