Tell me about Alys Beach

Wife wants to go there this summer. Worth it? Not worth it?
Positives? Negatives (obviously price)?

Disclosure: stayed in Seaside mumerous times; only driven to and walked around Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, Watercolor and Watersound.
The biggest issue I see with Alys Beach (other than the price, most expensive on 30-A) is distance to the beach itself.
When Seaside was developed and was a thing, their rental cottages were typically no further than 1200 feet from the beach (those along Forest Street at the rear of the "town"). Most places were a short block, maybe a block and a half to the beach -- 700 feet or so. An easy walk or quick bike ride. At Sesside, 30A is practically ON the beach, just a thin row of houses or commercial stuff was between 30-A and the bluff overlooking the beach.
Now, take the newer stuff like Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, etc. 30-A is much farther from the beach, and the residential portions of these 'towns' extends WAY back from 30-A.
The cottages/homes at the rear, you're looking at a 1/2 mile from the beach. That's too far.
I personally go to the beach for THE BEACH. And while I prefer a nice nearby beach cottage to a high rise condo, I ain't walkin' no half mile to get to the water...
Seaside was nice back in the day (90s, 00s) but we quit going there in the mid-teens; it's just too crowded, not just from people staying there but from daily visitors.

I'm assuming price is not a major issue? Its one of the more expensive places in the area, but for mostly good reasons.

It's in the budget.
Just trying to decide if it's worth it. Looking to just relax for a week but also have entertaining options for younger kids

Alys Beach would be the last place I’d stay on 30a. There’s construction all over 30a, but for it’s size, Alys probably has the most. It’s beautiful and fancy, but it doesn’t have the charm and atmosphere of the others because it’s not built out and has so much construction. You can stay anywhere else on 30a and still enjoy visiting Alys....eating at George’s, Neat, etc.
If your wife likes that end of 30a, stay at Rosemary.

I’d recommend Watercolor for kids. Their pool options are better than the other areas on 30a. Hate to sound like I’m railing on Alys, but it’s down the list for kids.

Carillon Beach
All the convenience without the expense. My wife grew up going here and we took the kids there every year when they were little. It's between Alys Beach and the park. Very little traffic.

Another option is y’all could ham it up in a suite at The Pearl in Rosemary. My wife loves that place.

We called there but they were all booked up.
This was a last minute vacation decision after some work stuff cleared up on our schedules.
We ended up booking a place this afternoon on Alys Beach. Hopefully we hate it so we never want to spend the money to go back there again.

If you are going with kids I would recommend Watercolor. I just booked a house for a week that is close to Camp Watercolor. Camp Watercolor has a waterslide, pool, lazy river etc. Also close to Seaside. Rented a cart too to get around and haul stuff to the beach. Here is a link to Camp Watercolor. Maybe a good bit cheaper than Alys. I got 3 kids under 11 so that was the main reason I picked it.

we've been going to 30A for about 18 years. we went last summer and probably won't be back for a long time. The construction is outrageous... mainly in Alys Beach like another poster mentioned. It was september and everything was still jam packed. traffic was terrible. There was nothing relaxing about any of it. It has completely changed from when we started going there.

Interesting observation. This seems to be plannned intentionally as they are trying to maintain/ increase values. But I agree, not sure why you'd want to own there when the planned completion is not for a long time and you can buy somewhere else with much less construction.
I suppose its mostly to be able to say "i own a house at Alys Beach"

Psst go in the off season like the rest of us. Off season holidays are busy but in a much more manageable way and it's more laid back. It also seems like there are far more long timers during those weeks. Summer is miserable.
As for Alys, I think it depends on the kids. I'm new to the parent thing so no judgment, but I've noted over the years that kids whose parents regularly take them to places like Sea Island or Alys tend to do fine and entertain themselves just fine in those environments. If they're used to being entertained by amusement parks and technology - maybe not. I do think Watercolor is a good middle ground.
