But BioNTech received substantial support from the German government in developing their joint vaccine. And taxpayer-funded research aided both companies: The National Institutes of Health patented technology that helped make so-called messenger RNA vaccines possible. BioNTech has a licensing agreement with the N.I.H., and Pfizer is piggybacking on that license.

That and you can't sue them.
This is the result of a law passed in the 1980's. Has nothing to do with Covid despite what conspiracy theorists say.
In the 70's the anti-vaxxers started claiming that the DPT vaccine was causing brain damage and begun a series of nonsense lawsuits. As a result of this litigation, the price of the vaccine skyrocketed and couldn't even be obtained in many cases. Pharma companies began saying "frick this were done with vaccines, it's not worth our time anymore."
In the 80's Congress passed the law to give them protection from frivolous lawsuits.
In 1990 a comprehensive study was done on the issue of brain damage. As expected, it had absolutely nothing to do with the vaccine but could be pinned down on childhood epilepsy.

Was DPT considered experimental?

Not directly for vaccine injury, generally speaking. In most scenarios you have to file a claim with a vaccine injury compensation program and can sometimes be compensated via an indirect route. And even then the burden of proof is high, as you can usually only be compensated for poorly manufactured vaccines (ie mistakes in the production line) and not side effects/consequences of the normal vaccine formulation.
When you take a vaccine you are accepting a baseline level of risk and we protect manufacturers from people who attempt to renig on the deal

Thanks. I guess COVID didn't get my memory, praise be to Bill Gates.

I know that the breakthrough that made mRNA viable happened in 2005 at U of Penn. Those two researchers filed for a patent but later licensed it out to both Moderna and BioNTech.
NIH might hold the actual patent, I don't know. It's possible the research at UPenn was funded by NIH. If true, then it would make sense that NIH owns the patent.
And, yes, Pfizer did piggyback off this patent when they partnered with BioNTech. However, Pfizer offered logistics, manufacturing and other expertise BioNTech couldn't have done alone.

There’s nothing nefarious about it just because it’s a government. They had a vested interest in the product being developed for a wholly unique situation.
Again, this entire thread really just comes off as “big pharma bad” *grunt*

Sometimes, regrettably, I lose my patience with the mentally challenged. But if anyone came into this thread angry, it was you, and reliably based on your inability to read and ignorance.

Did you seriously post your salary?

Lets try a little exercise in context, shall we?
Take the following statement"
"Lets eat Grandma!"
Imagine that being said by a child on his way to the dinner table.
Now imagine it being said by Jeffrey Dahmer on his way to the basement.
You are a known, snarky-assed little lefty, and Thine is a known borderline psychotic right wing truther/prepper type. When you snap back at him with the comment you made, it comes off as a smart-assed attempt at a mic drop. Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but your intent adds nothing to the context of what you originally wrote.
Your reputation on here has nothing to do with my ability to comprehend written phrases. No different than me chirping my usual screed on a more liberal board.
If you are mad about that, its nothing I can help you with.

Snarky yes. Lefty, this is your misunderstanding of my disagreements coupled with my not being a trump sycophant. I challenge you to find a post of mine pumping a left position.
The rest of your post just shows that your anger augmented your inability to read.

sighs.
Let me try it this way. You had 3 replies to your post. All of them clearly took it as a shot at capitalism, not at anti-capitalists as you claim. In fact, when Thine attempted to defend his statement, you replied with a rather ironic justification considering what you wrote above.
So maybe you're just an a-hole.... an angry a-hole.

Pfizer brought to market hundreds of millions of doses, in less than a year, of a vaccine that is incredibly effective against a virus that caused a global pandemic. This company and its public/private partners is one of the main reasons being an American is an amazing privilege right now.
If that’s not worth an uptick in corporate earnings I don’t know what is.

That isn’t true. One said I missed the mark and the indictment was more at corporatism, the other was thine with his usual bs defense and then your unique confusion.
Basically, two of the responses understood my post. Only you missed the mark...by a country mile.
