Will an incorrect name on a domestic airline ticket cause problems?

Looks like I when I booked two weeks ago I put my middle name in the 'last name' field. Delta's Modify Flight page will let you change your ticket, but I can't simply edit my name on my existing ticket. My middle name does appear on my license if that helps.

I would bet yes.
My wife and daughter have the same first name. Different middle initial. I once booked both of their flights as Ms. Jane Baldona. Apparently this is a mindfrick to airline employees and even though they each had different socials and birthdates and my daughter has a passport and my wife had her DL (with photos mind you), it still caused a major freaking issue. We almost missed our flight due to the desk agent having to spend over an hour on the phone with corporate as she couldn't change the 1st Ms. to MRS. on her own. They thought there was tickets booked for the same person, twice.
So yes, I would 100% take care of this ahead of time.

Yes- I almost couldnt get on my flight leaving JFK. I had my nickname, not my formal name on the ticket,DL was formal name. Spent 45 at the TSA counter with their bs until they let me go through. That being said, I lost my DL in Nashville one night and used my Sam's card to get thru TSA. Of course it was a madhouse and Justin Beiber was coming thru and they were just trying to move folks.

I get why the Airlines thought it was an issue have 2 tickets for the same person, but this can't be abnormal especially as you pointed out with all the juniors and seniors and 3rds out there. If the birthdays and socials are different it has to be somewhat of a routine thing?

I did this recently and was more pissed about it possibly affecting my pre check than anything since it also didn’t match my name on those records. They fixed it for me at the desk

Had a group of us from work going to Europe for a business trip and the admin booked one of the employees with the wrong name. Spent about 30 minutes on the phone after they realized and was easily able to get this fixed. There were some extra protocols and verifications; but nothing over the top (3 years ago).

Get it fixed; the mismatch will definitely cause problems, starting with the TSA person at the podium who checks your boarding pass.
My better half is a "third" who usually uses a shortened form of his first name. All will cause problems, so he spells it all out and includes the suffix on every plane ticket so it 100% matches his passport.

I concur with others to get it fixed before the trip. A few years back my wife booked our family trip to London. She somehow screwed up the name of our youngest son on the ticket. It did not match his passport. After United trying for over an hour, they tried their best, we missed our flight out and therefore our connection in Newark. Ultimately it worked out as British Airways was our ultimate carrier to the UK. BA found us a direct flight to London that arrived earlier than our original itinerary. All was well other the stress getting out of IAH until we landed and our luggage never made the trip. BA took full responsibility and even reimbursed us for clothes we needed to buy in London.
