Asian Vacation

Nedd some ideas for an Asian trip. Planning to go for 2 weeks. We're thinking of Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali during Christmas and New Years. Any suggestions or recommendations about places to stay, eat, sight see, etc?

Feels like that’s a lot of ground to cover in that time frame but not sure where your starting/landing points are.
If you are coming from the US and travel time is included in those two weeks, I’d suggest eliminating one place.

Starting in Denver. I figured we would fly to Tokyo anyway so we would just stay there for about 3 days. But after doing some research you're probably right. We actually decided to do Singapore instead of KL. So may just do a week in Singapore and a week in Bali.

It will be cold in Tokyo and hot in Bali. You're gonna need a bigger suitcase. I highly recommend all of those places but you will spend several days flying, hopefully in business class.

From denver I’d recommend doing Palawan, Philippines and do an extended stop over in Tokyo on the way back for a two week trip. We did this exact trip for our honeymoon and it was amazing. I looked into doing Bali and the travel times to Bali from Denver were too long for a two week trip.
Look into staying on noa noa island in the Philippines. Definitely the best place the wife and I have ever stayed and between the two of us we’ve done a lot of traveling.

We recently had a trip planned Singapore to Maldives. Just as you described. Houston to Sing for a few days. Then direct flights to Maldives for a few days. Covid postponed it but hoping for later this year.

Kuala Lumpur,
KL is a shithole outside of seeing Petronas Towers. Truly 3rd world outside of staying on the main strip where the high end shopping is.
I’d do 2 days in SG and then to Bali.

You don’t need a week in SG... 2 days is plenty.
Like someone else recommended, could do Philippines. I haven’t done Palawan, but Boracay is stunning.
Do Philippines for 3 days, SG for 2 days, and Bali for 3
Just know in PH, you’ll have to fly into Manila then transfer over to the shittiest domestic airport I’ve ever been in. The international and domestic terminals at PH aren’t near each other.

You should decide what type of trip you want to do. What are your must do's in each city?
Tokyo-Seoul trip if you want cities/sight seeing.
If I had 3 days in Tokyo, I'd do Shibuya, Harajuku and Shinjuku, but you could easily spend a month in Japan - Kyoto/Osaka, onsens, Mt Fuji, etc.
If you want beach and haven't been to SE Asia, go to Krabi and Bali. Ao Nang, Railay, and Phi Phi in Krabi.
Seminyak, Ubud, Hanging Gardens.
KL and SG while great cities, would not recommend, especially for a first timer as you'll have much more to do elsewhere.

I have serious doubts Japan will take tourists in this year. 70% of their population doesn't even want a no fan Olympics.

I agree with this.

So if 3 days is enough for Singapore, and we give Bali about 5 days, there is still 4-5 days for somewhere else. I understand if we do tokyo we will lose a whole day of travel from Tokyo to Singapore. Just trying to figure out how to be the most efficient and see as much as possible but at the same time not try to squeeze too much in and appreciate and enjoy the trip. All of these suggestions are great. Please keep them coming.

Bangkok and/or a Thai island. Can fly direct to Bangkok from Bali for lik $150 and be there in 4 hours. I went to Koh Samui and really enjoyed my time there.

Hong Kong is great. I've been and would go back. I have very well traveled friends who love Cambodia and go whenever they can.

I'd spend the whole time in japan myself, lots to cover there.

Japan in Winter is beautiful and unless it’s buried in snow continues to run efficiently.
Three or four days in Tokyo, two or three in Kyoto, Nagasaki & Hiroshima on down to Kagoshima all via Shinkansen (bullet train). Fly back to Tokyo or Osaka for your flight home.
Stop in Hawaii on your way in for a couple of Beach days if you have to scratch that itch.
*IF Japan is fully open post-COVID-19

Hit up Taiwan. You can spend 2 days in Taipei, take high speed rail to Chiayi (about a 2 hour ride) - 2 days there, take a day trip into the mountains (lots of great hikes, for example, Longyinshan Trail). Then high speed rail down to Kaoshung - 1 day there and 1 day down at Kenting National Park (beautiful beaches and scenery.) Basically, you can hire out a driver for the day very reasonable -- to take you into the mountains (when in Chiayi) or the beach (when in Kaoshung/kenting). If you feel like it, take a quick flight to Penghu and take in some squid fishing (gotta take a bite of your first catch while it's still on the hook). Don't have time to do some squid fishing -- hit up a Shrimp fishing spot in Taipei -- guaranteed fun experience, especially if you're willing to buy and/or drink a beer or two with the locals and get to know them.
Food is incredible everywhere you go (din tai fung at Taipei 101 is a must). People are friendliest you'll ever encounter. And 100% the safest country you can visit (unless, of course, China decides to take Taiwan back while you are there).
1 week there and you'll see the entire country without feeling "rushed" -- as small as it is, you'll find out how different each region is (topographically and food).
That still gives you a few days for Tokyo (Taipei to Tokyo about 3 hour flight). Spend a few days in Tokyo and have a great time.
Taiwan is an often overlooked gem of travel destination.

He's traveling in 2021, not 2022 or 2023. Taiwan basically has no COVID but I think less than 1% vaccinated. They are very unlikely to allow tourism this year from those two factors alone.

My bad. Did not see that.
I assumed it was a “when things open up” query.

We would like to go this Christmas but obviously depending on how things look with covid by the end of the summer to be able to book everything. If not this year then it will definitely be in 2022.
