PSA: Book your summer vacay car rentals now...

Two weeks ago I checked for a SUV rental out of Denver for a week and it was between $300-350. I didn't book it because I thought I had time.
Today, intermediate SUV is $779. I was astounded at the increase in just two weeks and did some research.
Apparently during the pandemic, many car rentals sold off large portions of their fleet and now are unable to replenish their fleets fast enough because manufacturers would rather sell to end users than fleet rates (makes sense).

Car rental prices are out of control. Have a trip to Buffalo planned over memorial day and will not rent a car as it's $90+ taxes/fees per day.

There was an article in the WSJ about this today. All the rental companies liquidated their inventory last year and now demand is drastically outpacing supply.

Probably by design to recoup lost income from last year

I was in Denver last month and couldn’t believe how much Uber prices increased. I used Lyft instead but they were also a little higher than they usually are there.

Booked one for a July Montana trip, several months ago and damn glad that I did. Absolutely nothing available now.

Our CDP is $30 a day at National. I have a BMW 228i right now. Have had a navigator, Audi A5, Q5 and Q3 as my last few cars.

I got an explorer for Fresno for Yosemite for a week for $500 in October.
Wife just booked a minivan in Tahoe for 5 days. $1000.

This. The wife has corporate National pricing. Just locked in $24 a day for a rental car for Yellowstone. The largest class they offer.

If you're in a bind look into the Turo app. Kind of an AirBNB for cars.

Big fan of Turo. Using it for our summer trip for the 2nd time.

Holy crap.
I just went to Boulder for 4 day weekend and car was $150 for the time I was there. Looking at doing a similar trip in June. It's now $550 for a Rio for the same amount of time.

Saw that car dealerships may be an option too if you're out of them.
