Houston's two Trauma Level One medical centers are a mile from a freeway (288) and 2 plus miles from the Southwest Freeway/69.

Most of the shootings in this city take place close enough to UMC where getting on the interstate isn't even happening.

Presumably there would still be an exit from the Ponchartrain Expressway at Claiborne to ground-level Claiborne, so ambulances could take that to Canal/Tulane.

Seriously, though, while that might mitigate some of the port issues, just the volume of traffic from population growth/commuter traffic to/from the north shore (specifically Slidell) over the last ~30 years has to be accounted for. That commute would be exponentially worse without that portion of expressway. If you forced all of that traffic through the westbank and the GNO, I can only imagine what things would look like, since the westbound traffic on the expressway approaching the bridge already resembles a parking lot at drive time. Someone better check these idiots’ math before they end up putting a serious nail in the downtown NOLA coffin.

Growth from Slidell has slowed... and a lot of those drivers would probably continue on 10 to the Ponchartrain.

Also, if this WFH home thing stays... even at a reduced rate than current... fewer commuters.

I don't think bringing the wrecking ball to Claiborne Elevated and calling it a day, is the answer.

Removing it would have to be part of a larger traffic / infrastructure plan for the region. Because you would have to relocate say 80-90 percent of the capacity to other routes. And that means expanding other routes / building new ones.

Now you are taking billions... which meant this idea was nothing more than a fanciful wish in the past.

But if Biden is gonna throw a few billion Biden Bucks towards the region and require that all of it be spent on roadways... now that's a different story.
