I picked up a canoer about 5 years ago coming in from an overnighter tuna fishing just south of port eads in mid December. Put his kayak in the boat and rolled back to venice was crazy dude had started where the Mississippi was just a ditch. Camped out on side of river for I forgot how many months as he made his way down. Smelled pretty bad but was an awesome dude.

Wife had a family friend who did the same thing, was raising money for cancer. We put him up for the night in Baton Rouge... Maybe it's cheating, but picked him up on the levy south of the old bridge and locked his canoe to the dock, came back the next day with his brother who helped him navigate the rest of the way to Venice.

There are dozens of people that do this every year. I help a few out per year with groceries, water, lodging, etc... in Vicksburg. There are people all up and down the river that do this, including some around BTR and NOLA.

Several years back I hosted some guys (Rediscover North America crew) for a few days that were paddling UPriver. They were doing roughly 25 miles per day in the MS.
