My 85-year-old Mom...

is in an assisted living apartment in Baton Rouge due to moderate dementia. We have not been able to have an in-person visit with her for over a year due to COVID restrictions. We can have visits through the window about 15 ft apart but she always tries to come outside when she sees us and it makes her really upset. We both walk away crying.
I just got an email from the facility that they were considering resuming in-person visits in common areas (can't go to their apartment) IF the person that is visiting has proof that they have been vaccinated.
I had no plans of getting the vaccine but now it could keep me from finally going to see my Mom. Sucks.
Sorry for the rant. Complicated and crazy world we live in now and the ripple effect on the innocent is endless.

It's sad because there is a man with dementia in the White House that gets to see his family whenever he wants.
Wish you the best

Man, that just blows. My mom is 85 years old and praise God, has her faculties and drives herself. I need to go see her. Thanks for the reminder.

I also have no plans to get the vaccine, "unless I have to." I don't know, right now, what "have to" looks like.
But I can tell you this: if I were in your shoes, I think I would get it. Go see your mom.
Again, I'm sorry you are dealing with this.

this sucks. sorry for what you are going through.
what gets me, is the flu kills more elderly people every year than any other age bracket, and nursing homes never once question the health of visitors before covid. complete infringement on rights and complete bullshite

As someone who was in your shoes this time last year, the restrictions put on families have been terrible for the resident.
Studies will definitely be done about the damage done to these nice folks.
I'm sorry you're going through this, but I know exactly where you are coming from and it sucks. Keep your head up because the company is hamstrung by state regulations.

You can probably thank lawyers for that too.
I would be terrified of lawsuits if anybody other than a democrat governor infected my nursing home

I'm sorry to hear it. I hope you are able to be together in the same room soon.

That sucks. If it’s any consolation, my 90yo grandmother had her injection, for this same reason. She responded well to the shots.
Sadly, it appears she and her nursing home friends have more limited cardio and lung capacities after being locked in for months and unable to move around.

The detrimental thing was the lack of activities in these places. They've essentially been confined to their rooms the whole time with zero interaction with any of the residents - even to eat!

The psychological damage these overzealous lockdown restrictions have done to our entire population, especially the elderly, are inexcusable.

Sorry Sull, that sucks. Honestly they should let you go back to their apartments also, I still do not understand why two people with the vaccine should not be allowed to meet in person in their own personal living space. If vaccines do not prevent enough of the risks then why are we event getting them? Everything in life has risks, and despite what some have tried to do, you cannot live your life in a bubble.
That said, I would urge you/anyone to look into the vaccine. Not saying anyone is wrong or stupid for getting it or not getting it, obviously a personal choice. However, a ton of misinformation on the vaccine has been spread. You can determine if it is right for you, but I have seen a ton of lies/misinformation about the vaccine, specifically when it comes to altering DNA.

Get the vaccine. Even if you think it's bogus, millions of people have been vaccinated with no adverse effects. And she presumably had it already, so you don't have a family history of adverse reactions.

Hang in there. Do what you think is right for you and your mom, whatever that turns out to be.
It is inhumane how they have treated the nursing home residents and their families.
Our family had an aunt and an uncle in memory care facilities. Both have died since the lockdown. Both would get a lot out of visits prior to the lockdown as would my dad, their brother, when he would go to see them. At times it was easy to forget they were actually having dementia issues.
Denying their spouses, children, family, and friends the chance to be with them as they were ill and later dying was cruel and heartless.

Sull, the CMS group has said that UNVACCINATED PEOPLE CAN INDEED visit their families. The facility is taking extra measures but the CMS says it's not needed.
I'll see if I can link it.

There will be a black market for vaccine paperwork soon if there isn’t already one out there.
