Maybe he is tired, biggest question is from what? It’s not like he does anything. He doesn’t recruit, he doesn’t handle pitching, he doesn’t handle hitting. He doesn’t even know what his players can or can’t do.

Surgeries

His father and father figure, Tommy Lasorda passing away.

I think the stress of the game and pressure the fanbase puts on him doesn't help either

My biggest concern with Paul is he looks way too emotional. Like with his age the pressure is way too high. It seems like every pitch and hit he is way too high or way too low. The rant can act like this but your head coach can’t. Might be rubbing off on the players. He’s got a young team with a lot of talent, coach needs to calm down a bit IMO. This tells me he’s thinking about hanging it up soon

Well, he has had two neck surgeries. And he doesn’t exactly stride jauntily to the mound on one of his many pitching changes. So retiring for “health reasons” is neither far-fetched or in bad taste.

Frankly, he seems like a guy who, if he gets his money, would just quietly go away. #crossingfingers

I honestly think he put it in final cruise control after the 2017 CWS finals. He knows what his record in Omaha was after the 2009 title and I think he felt he vindicated himself just by getting to the final in 2017. Of course, we don’t think that way at LSU.

I'm no Baseball nerd but I've been to more home games than most of the Rant and watch/listen to every away game. He experiments more than any coach I've ever seen, often at the befuddlement of the fans and media. Remember Hellmers at 3b? That didn't work out but he saw something so he tried it.
Bianco or Sanford this weekend? He saw something.
Didn't he say the wind would affect his decision on who to play in a game?
The Advocate talks about this exact thing

To say Mainieri doesn't know what his players can do is not fair or accurate. I think he puts too much stock in what they do in practices leading up to each game/series rather than their overall ability. I'd call him a Micromanager to a fault.
I've called him "The Tinkerer" ever since 2008 b/c of that strategy when we went on a streak after he tinkered. But it's more of a gamble.
