Biden Administration weighing a "vehicle mileage tax" to fund infrastructure projects

A gasoline tax won't work because more and more people are switching to electric cars. They're just going to keep finding new and clever ways to suck money from us. Since we're starting to no longer pay at the pump, they need money to offset, so they're going to keep track of the miles we drive in our cars to do it.

Buttigieg, who spoke with CNBC’s Kayla Tausche on Friday, also contended that President Joe Biden’s forthcoming plans to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges and waterways would lead to a net gain for the U.S. taxpayer and not a net outlay.
“When you think about infrastructure, it’s a classic example of the kind of investment that has a return on that investment,” he said. “That’s one of many reasons why we think this is so important. This is a jobs vision as much as it is an infrastructure vision, a climate vision and more.”
He also weighed in on several potential revenue-generating options to fund the project. He spoke fondly of a mileage levy, which would tax travelers based on the distance of the journey instead of on how much gasoline they consume.
“A so-called vehicle-miles-traveled tax or mileage tax, whatever you want to call it, could be a way to do it,” he said.
Democrats have slowly pivoted away from a gasoline tax in favor of a mileage tax amid a simultaneous, climate friendly effort to encourage consumers to drive electric cars.

Death and taxes.
The question is where the legal backing is to have such a tax.

You already do that.. with.. you know.. income tax. You build/upkeep the roads so I can drive to work and you take my money for my trouble. Spend it how you will but don't come asking for more under the guise of bullshite (or at all).

Just a way to frick over red state citizens. Booty wants you to live in a big city and never travel outside of it.

Domino’s once had a commercial proving private enterprise could maintain roads.
It went away quickly.

This would completely screw business that have a heavy traveling presence. Construction companies, service, salesmen, etc. Dems will never stop coming to get every penny!

Don’t gas taxes already do that?

Last I checked, business was all in with Biden. The goal is a return to serfdom. Corporations are good with that because it means low wages and guaranteed labor force.

At least it’s a tax poor people will have to pay. Maybe then they will see how ridiculous all this taxing and spending is by democrats

I’d be curious to see how many miles different earners drive. I can’t imagine those in the “poor” bracket drive very far.

What would be the mechanism to determine mileage driven?

Well, one thing is for sure...there will be hard work but good paying jobs for those immigrants coming across the Border as the roads, bridges, parks and airports are upgraded. Because we know that there is one Demographic that won't flock to hard manual labor, for reason which if I state, might get me whacked. Not that they'll need the money anyway; government payouts will be generous.
Trump would have done this; it is the only possible way out, especially since the Border will remain open. Flip of the coin.

Freedom's just another word for more miles means more money mongering...

Once we are all forced to buy electric cars a mileage tax will still be too good to pass up by the socialist. The socialist know how stupid their voters are, they said so when the architect of Obamacare was explaining how they could get away with their scam. So scamming us with a stimulus of 1400.00 and turning around and taxing us 10 fold and thinking we will never notice has been on their table forever.

A thought tax. Libs are good at reading minds and they hate those who think their ideas are not accepted. That way when chief justice gets a hold of it he will agree its a tax and give his lib friends what they want.
