I know it has been awhile, but can anyone point to when carrying became legal? Feels like sometime in the mid- to late-90s, probably.

I wonder about this a lot. Some of these guys take 10 steps between dribbles.

There is no penalty for carrying or palming. There is a violation for double dribble, which they don't seem to be too concerned about. By the rules, a dribbler can approach a defender and bat the ball from under the ball sending it over his opponents head and continue to dribble. yup just like in grade school.... The only stipulation is that it is not held in the hand (thrown) and the that it must bounce on the floor before being touched again. Same as a normal dribble.

should be a rule that if you’re dribbling, the dribble stops if the ball goes over your chest

I think it started with Pete. I became popular with the fans so it was expanded.
Now they ignore the rules if its convenient.

Guys, the OP is talking about carrying, not extra steps travelling.

And yes, both became legal in the mid-nineties. I distinctly remember the first player I became frustrated with because of blatant uncalled travels: Patrick Ewing.

The epitome of uncalled carrying was the season Isaiah Thomas averaged 29 for the Celtics. 2016-2017. Without carrying, he would have been a borderline NBA player, probably too much of a defensive liability to even make a roster.

If carrying was enforced, it would be as much of a game changer as if illegal man downfield was enforced in college football. Ball dominant wing players such as LeBron, Durant, and Leonard carry almost every time they dribble.

Used to be called like a motherfricker when I was in high school. Of course it was a private and small school league and they called everything.

Old school hand must be on top of ball been gone. Then they let you carry it round the corner to basket as long as it didn’t give you an advantage
