Walk by the New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman weight room on any given day and you’ll probably hear Metallica or Pantera blasting on the speakers with LSU offensive line commit Bo Bordelon putting in work and leading the charge.
He’s put on nearly 35 pounds of muscle in the last year turning himself into a SEC recruit, set to play at his father Ben’s alma mater.

Teammate, classmate and fellow LSU receiver commit AJ Johnson has been hitting the weight room hard as well. He walked in the door 165, 170-pounds and now stands in at a sturdy, college ready, 6-foot-4, 205-pounds.

If he keeps his speed and agility at that size, he'll shoot up recruiting boards.

quote:holy crap. That's impressive... coaches don't forget such things either. That gets you on the field as a freshman right there.

Holy crap!! 165 to 205... no way this is true. 40lb and it's not fat or bad weight. That's really hard to believe and keep his speed. we will see but I an excited to see what truth is

I find it hilarious when they make these claims "put on 35 pounds of muscle!!!!" I'm sure he's working v hard and getting stronger but its not an exact science

It’s shorthand for not gaining bad weight, but I know what you mean.
The writers are just trying to show how it’s a good thing rather than Shelvin gaining 30 pounds every off-season.
For basketball fans, it’s like how Brandon Ingram gained muscle on his very light frame as opposed to bad weight that some guys can get after picking up an injury.

Really believe both of these boys going to be GREAT Tigers!!
AJ will probably shine sooner, but I think Bo going to shine the brightest. Can’t wait for them to get to campus!

Isn’t that spread out over 3 years? I took it as he weighed 165 or 170 as a freshman and weighs 205 going into his senior year. Maybe I’m wrong but if I’m not then that is totally possible and natural.

No it’s not at all. It’s hard to believe for a 25 or 30 year old but not 17-18. I gained like 50 lbs and grew about 6 or 7 inches from one year to the other and I assure you I didn’t work near as hard as this kid is and does. Most was simply genetics and age growth.
My growth spurt wasn’t subtle and it could have been because of the timing. I had started working out for 7-8 grade sports and so I was probably already working out 2.5 or 3 years when it hit me. So it’s possible that me being active at the same time as my growth spurt caused it to react more aggressively with me? I’m not sure but it was significant growth in a short time frame. Anyway, point being is that it is very possible and even more so for the kids these days with all the help they have.

Yup. I was a D1 athlete and my growth schedule looked like this:
First Day of HS - about 5'0" 110lbs
Last Day of HS - about 6'0" 155lbs
Post-freshman year of college - 175lbs
Senior year of college - 195lbs
And that weight gain certainly wasn't fat. We were lifting weights obviously but more twitchy-motion oriented stuff than bulk-adding oriented stuff like these guys are surely doing. That type of gain is definitely achievable for a 17-22 year old athlete.
