Because you're smart, deaux. Don't let anyone tell you different.

I also want to see Crews up with men on more. I get wanting him to have more at bats. And the only time it really works out for you is the 1st any way. having Milazzo in front of him aint helping.

Lead off equals at least 25 more AB’s this season.
where are y’all getting this number? Compared to what batting position?
Ben McDonald said it during the game if Crews batted 4th vs leadoff. I think he said 20 ABs.

quote:4th, that would make more sense since there are's a third of the lineup ahead of you that could get an extra AB before a game ends. 20 ABs out of 60 or so games is right at 1/3. But most people want him 2 or 3. At 2 that can only be 5-7 ABs difference over a season. I would love to sacrifice those ABs for 20-25 more RBIs, wouldn't everyone?

If Crews is such a great RBI guy that you feel compelled to have runners on for him, then move him back to three. Giving more at bats to crummy hitters is NOT the answer!
Who is calling Morgan a crummy hitter? I think everyone on here that wants to move Crews back wants to move him to 2nd or 3rd in the lineup. We want Morgan in front of Crews, not Milazzo.
Through 9 games this season, the one and two spot in the LSU lineup has the same amount of plate appearances.
Over the course of the full season, there may be a difference of two, three at most. I’d gladly give up those three plate appearances to get Crews up to bat with more runners on base.

There's really no point in responding to him. He will drop in a thread, say something stupid and then never return to discuss the replies.

Ben is being polite for the public broadcast. A coach will always have a reason for the decisions they make. 95% of the time, the broadcaster is not going to criticize the coach on air. So Ben is giving the bulletin points in favor of the coach’s decision.

There are two simple things that could vastly improve the chances that Crews comes to bat with runners. And they all have to do with the difference in number of at bats over the course of a season being minimal.
Move Crews to 2 (especially with Morgan leading off).
Move Milazzo to 8. This one is a little more hairy, because Thompson hasn't really proven to be all that great at getting on base, but his OBP is .100 higher than Milazzo's.

No way PM is doing this to try and get Milazzo better pitches right? That can't be a real reason. Putting Milazzo ahead of Thompson can't be that detrimental to his BA bc it's already pretty low. Thompson on the other hand, could use better pitches imo. Him hitting ahead of Morgan could really make him like a second leadoff.

This is how I look at the 9 spot all the time.
The overall number of PAs isn't very different between that 8 and 9 spot in the majors, over 162 games. That shrinks even move over 56.
You could look at the difference between the 7 spot and 9 spot and determine who you want to have more at bats vs who you want to be up in front of the leadoff, but those spots change enough anyway that I feel like you're more likely to have a consistent 9 hole guy than 7 hole guy.

I think he just put what he thought was his best hitter at leadoff coming into the season and now doesn't wanna mess with him. He said he didn't wanna even move him to CF.

“The possibility exists we could move Crews to center and plug Drost into right if we wanted to,” Mainieri said. “I don't really want to do that because I think Dylan has found a home, and I don't want to mess with his karma.”

Honestly, with Drost emerging and if he can be consistent, there won't be any more excuses to keep Crews at leadoff once Doughty returns. Not that there are many now, but at that point Crews would have all the protection he needs from Drost/Belosos/Doughty.

Meineiri is not completely out of his mind for putting Crews 1st in the line-up. Ben McDonald gave a very good, legit explanation as to why it’s a sound idea, last night.

Is this even statistically true over the course of 60 games? I don't think it is.
Look at the 2019 stats. Antoine Duplantis had more attempts at the plate in 2019 than Josh Smith who lead off for 52 of 66 games. Smith's starts split per batting order (1-2-3-4-5) were 52-5-1-6-1. Duplantis starts per batting order were 7-10-49-0-0. Duplantis played one more game and had 5 more attempts per my rough math, 305 to 300. Their attempts per game are not statistically different.
I think in 2017 K Rob led off for most of the year and had the most attempts over Freeman who batted 2nd most of the year, by 3 attempts.
There are a lot of factors but I don't think the difference in plate appearances is near the 20 that keeps being thrown around. It's likely much closer to 5 attempts in this scenario.

There is a way to leave Crews at lead off, while giving him more RBI opportunities. It involves a better player batting 9 though. I think Gio is that guy when he returns.

PM didn't update Gio's status this morning. I wish TBob had asked about him, too. A hamstring is no joke. It's a huge muscle with lots of tissue to heal. 2-3 weeks isn't going to happen. We need to find a better solution NOW because he won't be available at the start of SEC.
