That is exactly what he said.

He did? The message in the OP didn’t mention last year’s work ethic.

Combined with covid

This excuse is weak. It didn’t affect the true blue bloods like Bama, Clemson, Ohio St, etc, etc

They may have been working hard, just not working smart...which was pretty evident in the d backfield last year. Maybe they grasp what they are being taught and are working hard to master it. That's our hope...right?

yea, no other teams had to deal with Covid, no spring practice, new coaches

Losing over 30 players off the roster is not an excuse but even a small minded person can realize that is huge number in regards to college football.

Covid, no spring practice and coaching changes had little to do with this past season.

What was the drastic change that all of a sudden made them want to work harder?

Umm is this a real question?

1) They got their arse kicked most of last year. That'll usually wake your arse up if you have any dog in you at all.

2) Our DC is in the building and not on the golf course.

3) There are no Covid restrictions keeping them from the building.

4) The best version of O is O with something to prove. He now has to prove that 2020 is the outlier, not 2019.

The bold part....

He literally said that working hard is a change. AKA they had to change from not working hard.

ow, that's a whole truckload of excuses. Other teams had to deal with Covid and a new coordinator too.

No one said LSU handled it well or that the results were acceptable. Acknowledging what happened doesn't mean you are excusing the behavior. My son bit his cousin cuz his cousin stole his toy. I don't condone my son biting but I can also acknowledge the reason it happened.

And no, we didn't play better as the season progressed.

IDC how many yards we gave up, winning games is an improvement on losing games.

They were not allowed because of COVID. The experienced players/leaders left the team for NFL. Np spring practice nor weight room for freshmen.

Every team experienced this. These 3 factors should not diminish your work ethic.

Yes it was a real question.

Shouldn't need to get your arse kicked to work harder
every team had COVID restrictions prior to the 2020 season, A coach should carry a chip on their shoulder every damn year to be better and do better. These are all excuses, period.

Not once did I say that any of these listed explanations are acceptable but to deny that they are the reasons for our failures in 2020 would be ignoring the truth for the sake of being angry.

Sure others had to deal with covid and a coach should always have a chip but no other program had the perfect storm of winning the natty, losing basically that entire team, replacing them with mostly freshmen and sophomores, and Covid on top of all that. I agree it should t have resulted in what happened but to deny that we got hit with the perfect storm of issues would be a lie.

We were complacent and inexperienced, not a good combo.

Also their are two options after getting your arse kicked, you can either tuck tail and run (Gilbert and others) or you can nut up and work hard to never get your arse kicked again. I’m glad our team is choosing to nut up.

No those are explanations not excuses. If you don’t have good experienced players you will be beat by teams that do.
we got beat by Miss State, Missouri, and utterly destroyed by an average Auburn team, losing by 37 points, when their next biggest win was over Kentucky by 16.

wins are certainly better than losses, but context is important.

We won the UF game because Trask made some terrible decisions and an idiot threw a shoe.

And we won the Ole Miss game because their QB had 6 turnovers, including a fumble when they were driving for the winning score.

Yes, those were both wins and I'll take it of a loss any day, but I'm not so sure we played much better than earlier in the season.

I think we can all agree that the team should work hard and be focused at all times.

Unfortunately our program fell into the easy trap of complacency after ascending to the mountain top. This was made worse because the players that knew how much work it took to get to the top were no longer on the team so we had a bunch of youngsters thinking they were just going to walk in and pick up where Burrow and Co. left off. Because of Covid, the coaches and the few vets that we had were limited in their ability to push the youngsters to the extent that was necessary.

Again, not excuses and not acceptable. Just the fact of what happened.

To me the improvement came in how the players handled adversity more than the X's and O's. Early in the year, if they got punched in the mouth, they folded. See the auburn game for example. They just didn't have the fight that was necessary.

In the latter part of the season, they fought tooth and nail till the very end of both games. That is improvement in my book. Sure they had to have some breaks go their way but it wouldn't have mattered if they weren't fighting hard.

And you hint at Ole miss giving the game away with TOs but I would say that LSU knew what they were defensively and played aggressively took the game by creating opportunities. Most of TOs were forced, not just dumb luck or missed throws. The Jay Ward pick 6 for instance was a beautiful play made by the D.

Hopefully a guy doesn’t die of a drug overdose while being detained by police this year so Ryan Clark can’t poison the team again.
