quote:No. I said Arky, Ole Miss, State, Bama too. And not just their starters. Their relievers too. I said what I said. Those two guys aren’t as good as we will see week in and week out in the sec. period.
Oh got you. Now we are comparing them to Vandy and Florida’s top three starters and closers or something? Is that the pre requisite for pitching in the SEC every weekend? Now that’s laughable

quote:Again, another straw man. I didn’t say this but you are putting these words in my mouth so you can argue against it as if I did. Vandy had 8 hits vs bad pitching and only got 1 run. That was a shitty day and not because of good pitching. That’s my point. It doesn’t have to go beyond that so you have something to fight me about. It’s not exactly controversial.
So Vandy sucks.

Nope 97 tailing away and picked to be the conference player of the year before he ever played a single game. Certainly not as good as anyone we will face. You’re so bright haha

“Those two guys aren’t as good as we will see week in and week out in the sec. period.“
No he was better than we will see week in and week out. You implied he’s not as talented as we will face week in and week out. That’s even worse. The other guy wasn’t exceptional, but if you throw 93/94 and throw strikes then yes you are the caliber of what we will see week in and week out. He had a breaking ball too if you didn’t notice

Let's recap your original statement:
quote:We faced 4 pitchers that day. The starter wasn't sec caliber. No one would argue that about Brynes. Not a pro prospect. Martin was the guy who Kd 6 but he also walked 3. He's a junior and that was just his 3rd appearance in 3 years. No one special. Skenes is just a freshman who's the two way player and got the save. He had zero hits in 3 games. He's the one guy I said could play on SEC teams as a pitcher. One inning. One damn inning in one game vs a guy who could relieve on a few sec teams does not equal the "arm talent" we will see for 27 innings on a weekly basis. Is that clear enough for you?
The pitchers we faced in the second AF game had arm talent that we will face regularly in conference.

Got ya. So they suck. LSU sucks. Everyone sucks. Fire all the coaches for every team.

So it’s just AF and CPM who suck? I’m trying to figure it out. Who do we hire now? O’Sullivan doesn’t even have the best team in his state and Corbins offense barely scored a run on awful Wright State pitching. Where do we go from here?
Oh and Helmers sucks, which you knew before everyone else. Not an SEC caliber pitcher
Was La Tech good? Did they have any SEC caliber players?

quote:I can't help you. You said Sunday we face sec caliber arms that we would see weekly. We didn't. That's the extent of this argument. You want to turn it into me saying everyone sucks because that's something you can argue against, but it's not something I've ever said.
I’m trying to figure it out.
So to recap. PM is either bad at evaluating talent or he missed with his gut in regards to Hellmers. We know it's one or the other. You haven't argued against it being one of those two. Hellmers isn't one of the top 10 pitchers on the staff (or top 5 relievers outside of starters and closer) because if he was, he would be pitching. That doesn't mean I think he sucks at pitching. We have a very deep staff this year.
quote:This weekend he sure didn't.
O’Sullivan doesn’t even have the best team in his state
quote:They were terrible with runners on base. Absolutely horrible. 8 hits and a few walks and they only got 1 run. That's bad. Not sure why you'd disagree with that assessment.
Corbins offense barely scored a run on awful Wright State pitching
quote:I already suggested we get a room.
Where do we go from here?

It's okay to be skeptical of Paul, but give it a few games before we collectively decide to hop back on the Fire Paul bandwagon.

So you have no solutions? Just CPM sucks?
Posted on 2/23/21 at 12:07 pm to GoneFishing21
quote:The solution for Hellmers would have been to bench him after game 1 when everyone knew it wasn't a good fit. We eventually got to Thompson and he has looked great so far. That play he made yesterday was smooth and he swung it well. We got to the solution, it just took an extra game than it should have. And yes, CPM sucks.
So you have no solutions? Just CPM sucks?
And that's not a new opinion of mine. His aggressive, flat swing approach to hitting turns guys like bregman into players who hit ground balls instead of HRs like he could have been doing. His hit and runs meant to get guys out of slumps or to create movement backfire 75% of the time because he uses them at the wrong time with the wrong pieces. His approach to the bullpen is going to lose us games because guys are always going to be a batter or two late getting ready because he's so afraid of them warming up without using them that he delays for too long (See Sunday when George had already walked in the tying and go-ahead run before anyone ran down to the pen). I have lots of examples over the years of him going against the statistically correct call to go with his gut. Deichmann swinging away vs Kentucky and Ole Miss as a freshman... Godfrey in the game vs TCU before Bugg and others in an elimination game of the CWS...
But don't think I don't defend him either. 2017 was a great year for him and I think he did a great job handling the Walker injury (although I think what helped Paul most that year was 3 best friends returning for their senior seasons to play one more time with each other). And when he started Poche game 1 in 2015, that was the right call too and I defended it here with plenty of backlash.

Leave Ty Floyd out there to walk people but bench Helmers because he struggled in the first game? Pitch your closer in the first two games of the season. The fact is if PM left Floyd in and he struggled then people would blame PM. If Fontenot came in and struggled or had a sore arm then PM would be blamed for pitching him twice in a row that early in the season. Because George struggled, that’s PM fault because he put him in. But, PM gets no credit for Coleman coming in or any of the lineup and pinch hit decisions he makes yesterday that were successful. Got it. Your hindsight decision making skills are amazing. I wish we had you on the bench making the tough decisions. That’s great that you defend him when we are successful and think he sucks when we struggle. Wow, what insight you have! The fact remains that there are very few programs that have been as successful as ours.

Yes. Leave Floyd out to walk people instead of the senior who’s known for walking people to walk people. It’s a simple concept. You learn something there. With George you learn nothing. With Hellmers in game 2, we learn nothing. Again, it was obvious after the first game he wasn’t the answer. He needs more time. One day, he could try again but not so soon.
quote:We lost the Poche game and I still defended it. It was the right call. 2016 was also one of his best coaching years. He got a lot out of a little. Defended him after that year too.
That’s great that you defend him when we are successful

Even though I’ve played baseball a bunch...I don’t like the “you haven’t done such and such so you can’t have an opinion about it” nonsense.

Did you complain about George pitching in the first game? We didn’t need walks that game either. You didn’t know George would walk anyone. People do improve things ya know. It’s easy to say you knew he would walk people after the fact. I’m sure you knew how George would perform this year just like you knew Helmers was competing for the starting job at 1st base.

You are correct. Maddux could certainly throw in the 90’s and often did. He also lived a lot in the 80’s. The point is made perfectly, if you aren’t ready for the pitch 94mph or 87 will certainly lock a batter up.
