How the hell can 140% of GameStop's stock be shorted?

I think the DOJ is looking at the wrong end of the wolf.

DOJ To Investigate Retail Day Traders For Possible Market Manipulation

quote:

Federal prosecutors are investigating whether market manipulation or other kinds of questionable activity played a role in GameStop’s stock surge this past January.

The surge happened when Reddit users on the WallStreetBets forum noticed 140 percent of GameStop’s stocks were shorts.

I was called a terrible attorney for suggesting there were laws in play for possible prosecutions

Exactly.

No retail trader is big enough to manipulate the market. The Redditors had to hope tens of thousands of unconnected people did the same thing.

You would also have to prove that an individual investor was trying to cause the market to behave a certain way as opposed to taking advantage of a widely publicized situation.

The fact that more people aren't outraged about this and coming together is disheartening. If people can't see that only the lower classes are the go-to guilty parties for big situations, then we are done.

Where do you think all of the DOJ and SEC investigators will go to work when they leave DC?!

I said all along this was going to happen, you may even get a couple of poor bastards who get made examples of.

No way the DOJ or SEC was going to let this go free. I’m honestly not sure their was intent here, but it sure laid the blueprint for what’s possible and they want to scare people from doing it again

Taser’s Short Attack: Smith discussed the recent volatility in GameStop Corp.
GME 2.57%
and how it was reminiscent of a similar period of volatility for Axon, which was then known as Taser, back in the early 2000s. From early 2003 to late 2005, Taser shares surged from under $5 to as high as $154 back down to around $5.

“We had a $1 billion short position come in in 2004, and that’s when all the craziness hit… All the negativity about Taser happened at the exact same time our short position topped a billion dollars,” he said.

Smith said the measures short sellers took to damage the company and its stock bordered on the absurd.

“Ultimately, my personal secretary was a mole who was sending information to short sellers who were then using it to manipulate the stock,” Smith said. “We actually think she recruited in specifically to do this job because she joined us only about six months before all hell broke loose."

If we take money from 10000 and move it as one entity to manipulate the shite out of the market, but we donate to politicians, that is groovy.

If 10000 people act independently in 10000 transactions, hold the phone and shut this bullshite down. Jail time motherfrickers.

Our govt is so corrupt
