Weird deer season......SE Alabama.

How did everyone do this deer season? Something seemed off to me. I had my same two stands set up nicely with good food plots and all and saw way fewer deer this year. Not a single buck came out during daylight hours. But I had them on camera at night. I ended up only taking one deer this year. Did anyone else experience this?

Same two stands sounds like you’re hunting those spots too much and unless you can come and go undetected.

We had the most deer and biggest bucks in a few years in Williamson County, Tx. (Georgetown / Liberty Hill area) Saw a lot of movement all but one hunt.

Henry County, AL
Same here. Never saw intense rutting action. Only spikes and fork horns during the day. Not even many mature does, mainly yearlings. The 8-point I got came out with only about one minute of shootable light remaining.

Yes, it was really strange in St Francisville, LA as well.
It was either on or off. We would go 2 weeks with zero activity....then a few days of good sightings. But there was little or no buck sign, at least where I was.
Season still open, so we will see if there is any rutting activity to be had.

North central Alabama here and one son experienced a similar scenario with Bucks on cam at night, lots of does just about anytime. Another son in a different area, maybe 10 miles from the other son, shot and recovered 3 bucks.

Sounds like y’all need to get the spotlights out next season.

We had our worst season in years. Deer stayed nocturnal even during rut.

Well, I just started hunting one of those stands last year while the other is in an area I’ve hunted for about 7 years now. Both stands I can get into rather undetected. I hunt when I can, based on my work schedule, but my land is really not pressured at all. The thing that got me was the immense amount of deer sign. Scrapes, rubs, tracks everywhere but saw way fewer than previous years.
I’m planning to blaze a few trails deeper into the property this summer and place at least two more stands in areas that haven’t been hunted before. I also plan to upgrade my stands to some decent box stands as well.

We killed some of the biggest bucks we ever have near Centreville. Biggest as in weight and inches.

What county? I’m in Houston co. I tagged out on 3 nice bucks and I made the fewest hunts since I started hunting. Wife and I first child born mid December. Also killed 2 does

I’m over in Coffee County. Looks like you had a good year! Congrats on the baby!

worst I can remember in 20 years at our place.
Full moon hit right when the rut started and everything was happening at night.
Add to the fact that we have too many does and the bucks had little reason to come looking. It got a little better late season but the rut SUCKED

North AL here - I didnt get to hunt much after Christmas between work and sports, but we had a down year due mostly to lack of work on us the hunters - werent able to get normal food plots in, limited scouting time, no cameras, fewest hours in field we have done in years.
We did good early season on acorns - Was able to hang a new stand on a hot group of oaks and my boy got his first, second and third deer this year. including his first buck (spike). We saw one nice but young 8pt, no other bucks seen this year

Similar report as the OP in Jefferson County, MS
Very little rut action the first week of Jan, when it is usually fast action.
Saw several spotted fawns into November, which means they dropped way later than usual, which means they rutted later last year (which we also suspected).
We expect the same next year.

Went once, saw one bigass buck, he saw me first... They may be one of the dumber species, but this one was a heck of a lot less dumb.
8ish points, was early dawn, couldnt see much. Man I would love to have that on my mantle now.

East Feliciana. Had a very low acorn crop this year which drove our sightings down since we hunt mostly hardwoods. Ended up one of our better years since we got good cold weather during our rut and had good buck movement.

In 25 years we have only killed 3 racked bucks in food plots. We still plant but rarely hunt the plots anymore. We hunt in the woods and around the plots. We typically see less deer overall, but a higher percentage are bucks.
Food plots are deer magnets but 80% is at night. Deer associate them with hunting pressure as majority of hunters hunt them.

If y’all need something to listen to, I’ll recommend the Southern Outdoorsmen podcast. I swear I learn someone’s every episode. It focuses primarily on southern hunting and on public land, but the tactics can work on private too
