Yeah..my deer hunting buddy uses a .270 but only if I have my big gun with me. If not, he takes a 45-70. We hunt on Admiralty Island, where the big bears are in numbers.

Haines, AK -> Haines Junction, Canada. (there is a good cheap hotel catacorner from this burger shop that has really good Bison burgers).

Haines Junction -> Tok, AK (Stayed at Fast Eddies Hotel/Restaurant)

Not bad, don't stop in Beaver Creek...ever. I had the worst night staying there late one October. I should have gone on to Tok but it was snowing fiercely.

Of course there are. I'm no local, but my understanding is 9mm, .40s&w and .45acp are considered not enough gun in grizzly country.

Is this you Roger?

I can live with a live margin for error when hunting white tails, not with my life.

Yupppppppp, we decided to skip over some of those small communities. I forgot where we stopped to get gas (maybe Destruction Bay?). Freaking weird having gas registered in liters.

I don’t know what the min/max per day is for PCS

In order get per diem allowances, you have to meet the following criteria during travel each day:

1.) Travel time exceeds 12 hours
2.) Average travel distance of 350 or more miles.

The longest drive we had in a day was about 12 hours from Denver, CO to Jackson Hole. We took the long scenic route (went north at Rawlins, WY and through Wind River Reservation, etc).

I didn't get per diem allowances for my "break" in jackson hole given I didn't meet the two standards I listed above.

There was a little gas station and I think theres a motel there too, in Destruction Bay. It was snowing from Haines Jct to Tok, so it was difficult to see everything but I would go to Tok if I could, or just stop in Haines Junction.

I like Haines Junction, the mountains to the SW are very impressive. We play them in Hockey every year.

Spent 3yrs in fairbanks...it gets fricking cold...winterproof your vehicles...always carry a gun if you’re off the road...carry chapstick at all times...keep a survival kit in your vehicles year-round...goldbond is great...apply lotion to avoid getting dry skin and itching...wear sunglasses when leaving the bar summer to spring

After the gray dreariness of the ferry ride (still beautiful going through wrangell narrows and stuff, but just cold wet and gray ), the drive from Haines to Haines junction was amazing.

It was clear and all those mountains in Kluane were beautifully white with lots of snow. Probably one of the coolest parts of the trip

I am not sure. I would like to drive, kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity. My wife and kids will probably fly up. The USAF will ship one of our vehicles, so Ill ship her Sequoia and plan to either drive or take the ferry with my Tundra. Ive heard negatives both ways (Canada is a pain to drive through with covid restrictions and the Ferry appears to be a mess).

I am planning to bring my .375 H&H and .45-70, will ship up my .300 win mag and .30-06. Should I bring a shotgun for waterfowl?

I dont think it is an Alaska thing, I just mentioned it because I assumed it would be a necessity to keep snow and ice out of the bed. I don't know, maybe it is unnecessary?

I have never had a cap, but when I was stationed in Minot I definitely saw the point and wished I had one at points.

Eagle River Nature Center

Just wanted to pass on the link to the Eagle River Nature Center. They have great trails, a good place for packrafting, and some great programs (not with COVID). This was one of my favorite areas to visit when I was in Anch.

REI Class Schedule
With COVID REI isn't offering much currently, but they have some great programs such as avalanche awareness training, wilderness first aid, etc.

Roger mentioned learning about bear/moose animal behavior. I expect they have classes on this as well, but it is good to learn about the different behaviors and what to look for. Our instructor recommended a book by Dave Smith - Backcountry Bear Basics. I may have mentioned it already, but I keep bear spray pretty much all the time and usually have my glock 20 with me on backpacking/overnight trips. I usually keep it with me anytime I am out in the fall as well.

I don't think it has been mentioned here, but learning a little about the Alaska Native Culture has helped living here (maybe not needed as much in Anc, but still a good idea). The Alaska Native Heritage Center was really well done. It is a great place to learn about the different cultures, the different arts, tools, type of homes, traditions etc. Heritage Center Link

I expect you are anxious to get here. I know I was. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to message anytime.

The drive up is long but worth it. Make sure all paperwork is in order for the border crossing.

Dad and I lived in Eagle River when he was up there..great little town about 25-30 minutes outside of anchorage

I remember going to the range for the first time when I moved west.

Hunting season was about to start and people were bringing in their rifles to get them sighted.

They were also practicing with their hand cannons. Accuracy and control were big issues. The first shot might be on target, but follow ups were harder and harder.

The advantage to the 9mm is the number of rounds you can put on target. And your ability to do it accurately. Grizzlies have thick skulls, but I don’t think anyone carrying a 9mm is necessarily crazy.

If that’s what you have the most experience with, and it’s what you can shoot most accurately under stress, then maybe it’s not a bad choice.

It's why I carry a Glock 20. More confident with the 10mm semi than I am with a revolver.
