I don't understand the appeal of having a pet that could harm someone. I just don't see the how or why. If it were me, I would have probably never owned that dog in the first place but if I somehow did, the dog would be put down first thing in the morning. Obviously, that isn't a choice that you can make for the guy, I'm just stating what I'd do if I were HIM.

As for you, I think the advice you've been given above is pretty good. Definitely sleep on it, anger conversations never go the way I intend for them to go. Emotions are high for both of you. The guy is definitely not a horrible human because he ran full speed and tackled the dog. A POS human wouldn't have done that. He may be able to be reasoned with.

But that is a conversation that needs to be had. Whether tomorrow, or mid week, but you need to fully decide where you stand and let him know. Nothing is more important than the safety of your wife and your child. He probably feels the same about his so hopefully that translates to him understanding your decision.

If not, sometimes a man just has to make enemies.

There no question I would do whatever I needed to do to ensure that would not happen again, and it will if the dog stays. My guess is the owner knows what he has to do, but more than likely will not do it. There may be a place for aggressive dogs, but it dang sure isn’t in a residential neighborhood where women and children are out and about. His property was trying to kill your property plan and simple. Life is to short to have to worry about stuff like this. With that being said I would talk to the guy and let him know you will not tolerate an aggressive dog and what has to happen or I will go to the authorities.
