Well, on tonight’s edition of his HBO show, Maher welcomed a pair of podcast hosts, the husband-and-wife duo of Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying, to discuss the origins of COVID-19. Weinstein and Heying, for the uninitiated, are members of the so-called “intellectual dark web” who in 2017 both resigned from their posts as biology professors at Evergreen State College in protest of a minority-appreciation day, and have since whined about campus speech on a number of libertarian-leaning podcasts.

Maher proceeded to forward the conspiracy theory that COVID-19 was man-made and somehow escaped from a lab in Wuhan.

quote:

“Oh, it’s far more likely than that,” replied Weinstein, adding that “it looked to be about 90 percent” probability that it originated in a lab. “We are so politicized and polarized and partisan now as a country that if the wrong guy proposed this to begin with—and for the half the country, it was the wrong guy—then the rest of the country says ‘no way, no how, we’re gonna call that a conspiracy theory,” added Heying.

Let’s unpack this a bit. The “wrong guy” Heying is referring to is likely alt-right gadfly Steve Bannon, whose anti-China group the Rule of Law Society produced a report alleging that the virus was not produced in nature and had escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This dubious “report,” which was again spread by Steve Bannon (and retweeted by Trump, and parroted by Tucker Carlson), was immediately shot down by prominent members of the scientific community.

I also brought up independent scholar (and left leaning) Josh Mitteldorf in prior posts

https://joshmitteldorf.scienceblog.com/2020/04/17/where-did-covid-19-come-from/

Where did COVID-19 come from?

There is genetic evidence suggestive of human tinkering in the genome, and there are news stories suggesting the virus might have been developed either at the Wuhan Institute of Virology or at the American virology lab at Fort Detrick. There are even some suggestions that the American and Chinese bioweapons labs may be working together, sharing samples and exchanging funding.

Part 1: The Genetic Evidence

Preface

We rely on the scientific community as a context for almost every public policy decision. People who want to influence policy know this, and they don’t just lobby Congress, they also buy scientists, scientific reporting, and placement in prominent journals. Most scientists are honest, but they have to survive in a world where funding is tighter than it should be. It’s not surprising that some of them succumb and publish what powerful and corrupt institutions want them to.

The question of a laboratory origin for COVID is politically explosive, so we expect a heavy hand restraining the science establishment. Those of us seeking an honest answer, who have a little expertise, a little horse sense, and a lot of patience, are left to sift through information, misinformation, and disinformation in a politicized environment.

"Conspiracy theory" has no meaning anymore if we can't speculate that the CCP is a bad faith actor

The left LOVES conspiracy theories, as long as they’re their own.

TRUMP IS AN AGENT OF PUTIN!!!!

INSURRECTION AT THE CAPITOL!!!!

What they don’t like is someone else creating a narrative they can’t spin. These people are EVIL

An American organization, EcoHealth Alliance, was doing coronavirus research under an NIAID grant at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

As you know, the NIAID is run by Tony Fauci.

We have effectively entered a period in which we cannot trust our experts. I think that what began as a desire to contribute and to do real work, ended with an understanding that we’ve got two generations of institutional experts that are corrupted, and that we cannot wake up from this crazy fever dream that we’re all in, because we can’t figure out who we can still trust.

The doctors are compromised. The professors are compromised. The Journalists are compromised. The politicians are compromised.

About the only thing that isn’t badly compromised are people with an independent source of sustenance — individuals and very small groups are about the only thing that is free of this disease of the Embedded Growth Obligation (EGO).

Quoting myself from a previous thread on Weinstein's appearance on Maher:

quote:

Interesting. So they came to the conclusion that CV was made worse because OMB suggested that the virus was man made from the Wuhan lab and if OMB syndrome wouldn’t have infected half of the US we could have put more pressure on the CCP to gain more knowledge of CV earlier and made the virus’ impact much less.

quote:

They definitely were inferring that notion. And you can tell Bill got the inference based on his melancholy disposition at the end of the interview.

The notion being that the entire media apparatus blew off the idea of CV being a manmade virus created in a Wuhan lab studying virial gain of function as a conspiracy theory.

Weinstein gives it a 90% chance CV is manmade and came from the Wuhan lab. The question is, was CV intentionally released or accidentally released. We will never know but the release of CV was awfully convenient to hurt the Trump reelection campaign.

It seems like Adam Schiff qualifies as a conspiracy theorists, as does Eric Swallwell.

The national media has made this point quite obvious for us.

And the statement is not meant to be nice to 'right side politics'.

Proof the media blatantly lies about everything.

What actually happened was minorities demanded all white people physically leave the campus and they said that wasn't progressive or sane and then they began getting death threats and being called Nazi's (despite them being Jewish).

Correct - and they did not resign in protest of that day.

They resigned after the left wing mob harassed them to the extent they could no longer step foot on campus.

The mob was checking vehicles trying to find them.

Amazingly, this segment has already made it into Brett’s Wikipedia page wherein it is “debunked.”

That’s one of those things that just stands out. Why is that idea so dangerous it can’t be examined? It’s still OMB.

Everything Sharyl Attkisson wrote in her book about the left has come true. She said the left can't logically refute anything. So, they rely on these responses to all charges from the right:

It's a conspiracy
It's been debunked
It's a campaign of disinformation

How does the military deal with situations like this?

You have a president that wanted a full investigation of the origin of CV but his administrative state fought tooth and nail against perusing that investigation.

Meanwhile this has the potential of being a full out biological attack killing hundreds of thousands of Americans.

For the military what is the difference if the attack is a big boom that kills thousands instantly or thousands slowly over a year? When do the generals step up and take away the investigative duties from people in the executive branch that are not loyal to this country?

This is a big problem. The administrative state under the executive branch (judicial and legislative branches too) has been infiltrated with people loyal to the CCP.

I means war. It's a bigger attack on the U.S. than Pearl Harbor and 911 combined.
