I saw some posts from a Louisiana based bonsai expert who used native specimens.
LA Bonsai

Anyone have experience or tips in creating bonsai with Bald Cypress or spruce pine? Or Bonsai info in general?

Also know of a good place to buy small bald cypress around New Orleans?

Look up Underhill Bonsai in Folsom. I have always wanted to get into it. They are active on FB

I did some research a number of years ago. I think you replant trees with desirable touch base sizes and cut the truck back and shape it over time to look like a full sized tree. This is the time of year to locate and dig up trees

I would probably forget to water them.

I 'did' Bonsai when I lived in Houston. I learned a lot about how plants want to grow and how to make them grow the way I wanted them to, two very different things.

Summers, and to a lesser extent spring and fall were a bitch, because if it got too hot, too dry, or too anything else, the reduced root systems couldn't take the stress.

Back then there weren't watering controls that could drip irrigate four times a day for a certain number of minutes and adjust those for changes in humidty (humistats were darned expensive then), or put up an awning when a gully washer thunderstorm would pop up and wash all the soil/rock mix away from the roots.

Can't skip no days watering in the summer here or else it's dead. I tried it and killed a few. Next time some sort of auto water system.

I’ve got a fukien tea that I almost killed because I forgot to water in the summer. What I do now is leave about 1/2 - 1 inch of water in a container that the ceramic pot sits in to absorb the water so I don’t have to constantly water. Not sure if that’s the right way to do it, but the tree has been doing fine.

There is a Louisiana Bonsai Society that holds regular meetings LINK but from what I can see they are based, all the meetings are held, in Baton Rouge but you email the contact officer on the website to see about any programs that might occur in New Orleans.

I have former work colleague that’s tried to get me in to it and a he’s member of the Society, and he’s told me that small groups like this are eager to help and provide guidance and assistance to newbies.
