Superman does have weaknesses, kryptonite. He also has many enemies that could be used that don't need kryptonite but since they can't seem to make a Superman movie without Lex Luthor we are stuck with that. Use Bizzaro, Doomsday and Superman actually has a villian.
I like Batman but to me he is just a glorified cop. I didn't grow up going man I wish I could be like Batman, have lots of money and build stuff to fight crime. I wanted to be Superman, be able to fly, run fast, etc

I don't know how they can do a "dark" superman movie without compromising certain aspects of his character.
Superman has always been a boy scout, for most intents and purposes. Truth, justice, and the American Way. That whole deal. Most of his struggles are pretty cut and dry. He is the embodiment of absolute good.
The guy is a walking tank. Anything aside from someone of equal strength (Doomsday) or kryptonite isn't going to stop him. This makes it difficult to build suspense or any sort of conflict.
In order to make this a dark film, they're either going to have to compromise his morals or have him throw off the kid gloves and royally frick up some shite. An epic battle through Metropolis, no holds barred style, would be pretty crazy.

so he has 1 weakness that only 1 guy uses against him?
and if you're one of those guys that you say is his equal why not just use that shite then beat the frick out of him?

DC's hero universe is inferior to Marvel's, but DC's other books which aren't part of their official universe (Sandman, Watchmen) are far superior to anything Marvel has done.
But I think making Superman "darker" isn't a good idea. what makes him Superman is that he isn't dark. He hearkens back to a more innocent time. I think, if anything, they should make it even less darker. He's a damned hero in the classic sense. Superman can be radically different by being the one superhero who ISN'T dark and edgy.

so you judge Superman off of one villain? Bizzaro, Doomsday don't need kryptonite to battle Superman, but Hollywood has chose Lex Luthor as the villain every movie for some reason.

sure they don't need it, but why not use it then whip his arse? seems like that'd be a sure thing

Superman does not need kryptonite (a cheap device) or Bizzaro or Metallo. The next Superman movie needs to emphasize the heroic part of the character.
Everyone loves a hero.
Superman is not a dark character. Superman embodies what is great about being an American.
Superman was created by two Jewish immigrants who wanted to succeed. Superman is an ideal, a symbol of who anyone can be.
You can make a difference.
You can make an impact.
You can be someone who doesn't fit in or who has a different background that can still relate and change how things are.
That's a great movie.

Superman isn't a dark character. That's a stupid idea. SR would have been a better movie if they had just brightened up the colors on the screen and not made it so dull. I really enjoyed Returns but that was always an issue for me. I guess the death of superman could be done dark but overall he is the embodiment of a idealistic bright hero.

The Superman movies have sucked since part 2. Three was ok and great when I was a kid but when I watched it again as an adult it was not very good. Four should just be forgotten.
I thought 3 and 4 were pretty bad. I've heard that they slashed the budget severely on the 4th one and basically released it incomplete.

Superman officially getting the reboot
I was thinking this exact thing this past weekend when watching the movie On Demand with my son. I didn't hate this new version, but I did hate the fact that they felt beholden to the first series of movie done by Donner and starring Reeves. I'd prefer if a new director/cast was going to come in and do it again, that they simply start over with their own take and tell the story...much the same way Nolan has done with the Batman franchise.
As for darker, I think everyone here is correct in the sense that Superman isn't a dark character. But in many of the more recent cartoon versions of the character he's also not magoo, either. He's straightlaced, by the book...but serious. With Reeves (and Routh who did an outstanding job mirroring Reeves) you got kind of a painted on smile empty-headed feeling from them. I kind of prefer the newer Justice League Unlimited take on him with a more serious, though not dark, tone.
Plus...the movie itself could be darker by simply making the movie around him more realistic, less campy. Think back to this past movie when Lex had Kumar drop that piece of crystal in the water in he train set. They actually dubbed in people screaming as the miniature train people werecrushed when the whole thing went crazy. Lose that kind of crap, make Lex (assuming he's the main villian) most less comical and there's your edge.
Oh...and don't fix the guy's hair as Superman into a hair helmet. That was horrible. Looked like a man wig most of the time...
I do think they got the costume right, though. The muted colors looked much better then the original movie I think.

But this goes entirely against hollywoods script which is to find out what works (the dark knight) and copy the hell out of it over and over again (hence the dark superman)....

You're right, but a dark Superman would ultimately fail at the box office. The movie could have dark elements (villains) and succeed, but Superman himself couldn't pull off a dark image.

does anyone know if Brandon Routh will be back as Superman in the rebooted franchise?
I thought Routh made a decent Superman. Too bad the script was a bit of a reach (having a kid with Lois ). And I agree with the previous posters, Superman is obviously NOT a dark brooding character. He can be serious without being brooding. Superman is drawn to his sense of duty and realization that he will always be isolated b/c of who he is....THERE'S YOUR ANGST! No need to give Superman a bastard child!
A great idea for a script would be to pit Superman against a villian we haven't seen on screen before --- namely Doomsday. Make the Clark-Lois relationship more playful and less serious.
If they go for a previous villian, General Zod could be a bad arse, if they modernized him.

If it's a reboot, then no, Routh will not be back.

If they wanted to use Doomsday, they should have done it 14 years ago.
I'm willing to bet that Brainiac will be one of the villians in the next one.

I'm telling you Smallville is the perfect template for how Superman should be. The way they have made Clark struggle with being who he is and keeping secrets from his friends and ultimately turning Lex against him made the story of Superman interesting.

Essential reading for anyone with even a remote interest in the character. This is how you do Superman right.

while superman returns wasn't bad, it really isn't a franchise that needs to continue, there are so mainly more interesting plotlines in the dc and marvel universes that would make much better 3 hour movies
of course that didn't work well with ghost rider

Would be interesting if they got Tom Welling to be Clark Kent/Superman. Smallville will have completed its run by then. He's done a very good job with the character and has vastly improved as an actor over the course of the show.
Maybe they could throw in some nudity with Kristen Kreuk or Erica Durrance and get an "R" rating.
