Suggestions on places to stay at the Grand Canyon?

Would be traveling two adults, two children. Probably stay 4 or 5 nights. Would prefer easy access to the South Rim.

Above the rim - El Tovar or Bright Angel Lodge
Below the rim - Phantom Ranch. It's IN the Canyon. More rustic rooms. You have to hike down to it.

4 or 5 nights at the GC is a long time. Stay in Sedona. You can see all you want to see of the GC in one day.

We're staying in Flagstaff in June for our Grand Canyon trip.

I was coming to suggest these two. With two kids and all the crap that comes with them... you won't want to hike to your hotel (Phantom Ranch).
I do agree with a poster above, I would spend 2 nights here then explore elsewhere. Unless you are incredibly avid hikers and want to hike every day.

Agreed. We flew in to Phoenix one night and spent the night on the outskirts of the city. Drove to the GC early the next morning and had from mid-morning through evening that day.
Spent the night in the park at one of the hotels and had dinner. Got up to see the sunrise the next morning and spent until roughly noon in the park. At that point I had pretty much seen everything I needed to see and was ready to go. Drove to Sedona and spent another few nights there.
There are some pretty cool hikes if that's your thing, though. I could definitely see someone spending more time just for the hikes. Sunrise and Sunset definitely make staying in the park worth it.

Friend,
Mother always said that a trip to the Grand Canyon that does not include a hike to the bottom and a stay at Phantom Ranch is not really a trip to the GC at all. Another way of putting it is to see the Grand Canyon at the rim is to see Tiger Stadium from I-10. To hike the Grand Canyon to its base is to be in the crowd on a Saturday night when LSU pulls off an upset over a top ranked team.

Do yourself a favor and stay in Sedona. 4 days is way too long for the Grand Canyon.

El Tovar as parking at south rim is horrible. At best.

Depends on how much of the canyon you want to see. For a minimum 1 - 2 day trip Williams, Az is a touristy town on old historic Rte 66 and walking distance to Grand Canyon railway.

Agree with this (for convenience purposes). Also agree that more than 2 nights is overkill. Keep in mind you're paying a premium for the location. This isn't a 4 star resort by any means. The rooms are ok at best. But it is nice to walk right outside and be on the rim. The views are amazing.

Like someone said above, El Tovar’s parking is terrible......and it’s a dump.
We won’t stay there again.
