The Saints are actually the sinking ship. Salary cap nightmare gonna make very difficult to retain good players. No QB. Michael Thomas appears to have thrown in the towel. Other assistants have already jumped ship. Payton now trying to salvage what he can.

Michael Thomas is having multiple surgeries and shouldn't probably even have been playing.

Luckily he didn't opt out though.

Saints’ WR Michael Thomas is likely to have surgeries on both the torn deltoid and other injured ligaments in his high ankle this offseason, per source. He knew it was likely Drew Brees’ last year and didn’t want to miss out trying win a Super Bowl with him.

Luckily orgeron has been ahead of the game interviewing other candidates throughout this process.

I mean clearly they had a plan in mind when they fired Pelini after less than a year. Candidates were already lined up.

This is correct

LSU’s fanbase is savages. There is no room for error and if we’re all being honest - who would rather be a college coach than NFL guy?

In the NFL if someone is a shite head you can his arse and then move on.

In college they have to suck teenagers off for 3 years to come to school and then babysit them to make sure they don’t violate compliance while begging a new group of teenagers to come there.

This does feel like he played LSU though and if that’s the case then he’s a dick

How dumb of a tight ends coach to become a head coach and an assistant general manager to become the general manager. Luckily they got out just in time

Assistant coaches taking Head Coach jobs is “jumping ship”. Lol

Eh, I think he probably genuinely wanted the LSU job at first. It's more money and more responsibility but he couldn't have known for sure what the Saints were going to come back to him with. And Dan Campbell leaving opened up the assistant head coach role and more money at the same time.

Oh that I don't disagree with at all. He also needs to shut the hell up and not talk about this at all publicly until a contract is signed.

This is the issue. The Saints did what was best for them and it wasn’t personal. This DC has drug on for months with O knowing probably since the Bama game they were getting rid of Pelini.

You cannot keep holding out for one guy each time and hoping for the best.

Like you said in another thread, we should count ourselves lucky the saints lost this week and not drag this fiasco out another week.

As a Nielsen fan, I'm glad both the Saints and LSU recognized his value & potential.

Dude deserves it considering his unreal developmental skills and consistent multi-year production.

The reason we’re having such a hard time hiring a DC is because WE (LSU) were that sinking ship last season.

Orgeron put all his eggs into the Freeman hire who got a free meal then we wasted our time with Arnett and then completely wasted our time waiting on Nielsen thinking we had this in the bag.

It’s kinda embarrassing

I signed up for 247 on Jan 1st thinking I was gonna get the inside scoop on the DC hire and here nearly 20 days later it looks like we’re back to square one.

Serious question. I honestly hate having to defend O because I never wanted him here to begin with but what makes you so sure that he doesn't have anyone else in mind and no other plan after Nielsen?

Also I read on here how it's Woodward running the show for the DC search when we are looking at guys everyone likes, then, when we miss out, O is an unprepared idiot who put all his eggs in one basket. Doesn't seem like he is getting a fair shake from most of you but then again what HC at LSU ever does?

The only thing I can agree with so far in this search is that O needs to stop feeding the media so much. I don't care if Freeman wanted to stay up north and Nielsen wanted to stay in the NFL. It's not good optics to show us miss on every hire. Needs to be quiet until something is signed.

there's been two instances in this search where its come to a still waiting on "his guy" While its not abnormal to get spurned by people within these searches, it is odd you weren't really continuing your search and vetting other guys until you actually had a signed done deal. Maybe they were behind the scenes but it sure doesn't seem that way

its similar to Lane...you were so unprepared for him saying no you ended up hiring a guy who's offense you weren't familiar not to mention the personality differences.

I have no faith Orgeron knows how to locate and hire someone independent of a recommendation. This search proves that. The OC search proved that.

Larry Coker won a championship too.

Yeah I agree with you about Lane.

However this:

We don't know for sure.

I just don't understand how some on here keep saying Woodward is in charge of this search to make sure O doesn't screw it up then turn around and blame O for screwing it up. It can't really be both ways. I'm reserving judgement on this whole hiring process until I see who we end up with.

Right now, all we know is:

1)Freeman didn't come because he wanted to be closer to home.

2) O wanted Nielsen but also interviewed other candidates while the saints were still in the playoffs. That candidate being Arnett.

3) by all accounts Arnett would not have worked out here so O didn't get desperate and just make a hire he waited to see what else was out there.

4) O misses on Nielsen and now we wait and see.

None of that seems really out of the ordinary for a coaching search. Missed on two guys, which was out of our control. Interviewed another that wasn't a good fit so didn't hire him.

Like I said before I think the biggest problem is O being to candid with the sports media. Just keep the hiring process going, but don't talk about it until it's done.
