Mobile & Gulf #97 in Buhl, AL. Was retired in August of 1970 as the last common carrier in the United State to utilize a steam locomotive. This pic is from 1960.
It was originally built at the Baldwin works in 1925.
It’s missing its stack but otherwise is intact.

Would that be Buhl, Alabama?
That’s right. On the banks of the Sipsey. Not exactly sure where this station was located but presumably off the old 82 near the school.

Taken by my grandfather in 1914 when he worked for the railroad as a young man.

If accurate that is very late for a little 2-6-0 like that.
BY that time locomotives had grown quite a lot in size and lines that only needed smaller power generally used older locomotives from nearer the turn of the century.

LOUIS RHEAD, ARTIST AND ANGLER, DEAD. Exhausted Recently by Long Struggle In Capturing a 30-pound Turtle.
... About two weeks ago Mr. Rhead set out to catch a turtle weighing thirty pounds which had been devastating trout ponds on his place, Seven Oaks. After the turtle was hooked, it put up a fight for more than half an hour. Although Mr. Rhead was successful in the end, he became exhausted. A short time later he suffered from his first attack of heart disease. Yesterday's was his second.

Some of you have seen the restored Big Boy in operation.
Here is one in regular service back in the 1940s.

Country was cooler back then.
Everyone dressed up to go anywhere.
Everyone smoked and was thin.
Men were men, and dames were dames.

I bet Sean Connery wouldn't be a fan of that scrawny action figure
