Key West Mask Mandate?
Posted on 1/14/21 at 5:49 pm

So I cancelled a trip to Jamaica for March. My wife and I were going to go for our 10 year anniversary. She still wants to go somewhere but she wants somewhere warm. I told her the only warm place in March is South Florida. I started looking at Key West and it seems they have a very strict mask mandate. It’s supposed to be in any public place including outdoors. Do any of you know how strict this mandate is? I’m not going to Key West to sit on a beach with a damn mask.

I can't speak for Key West, but we made a couple trips to Miami (September, November). Masks are worn in stores, in the hotel lobbies, and outdoors on the sidewalks where you might come into contact with people people wear them off their mouth/nose but pull them up when you're close to people. Other than that, no one was wearing a mask on the beach and only a few were wearing them on the boardwalk. Not a big deal at all.

They had cops patrolling the main streets telling folks to put their masks on a couple of months ago.

I was just there two weeks ago. I'm pretty sure that no one is going to make you wear a mask on the beach. People would wear a mask walking to their beach chair and then take it off.
On Duval Street, which is always crowded, there are officers enforcing masks, and businesses aren't going to serve you without one. Other than the areas around Duval and Mallory Square, no one outside is going to care.

By the way, Key West doesn't have a whole lot of nice beaches. If beach is a big part of the trip, then stay at the Casa Marina or at The Reach.

Casa marina or reach? Who has the better beach?

Casa Marina is an incredible old hotel. Beautiful but expensive. Great pool area but I’m pretty positive that has a man made beach and not a large beach.

The Reach is the only purely natural beach on the island. It's the best, but it's not a large beach -- you aren't going to play volleyball there, because there's not enough room.

Are bars open for indoor service?

This is accurate. And yes indoor service is open at restaurants

Yes it’s business as usual there.

Just got back Monday from KW. Masks are required inside buildings, establishments, and hotel lobbies. I stayed at The Reach and everything is wide open and rolling. KW is very easy to bike, walk or Uber around. The beach at The Reach was nice considering there aren't many beaches in KW. We did a eco kayak tour and a tiki boat tour (BYOB) to a sandbar (no masks once on your vessel). Very enjoyable!!

Just got back from key west this week. Walked by multiple cops on duval without a mask and they never said anything. Wore one indoors everywhere we went though. I’d said it was about 50/50 people wearing and not wearing masks outdoors

I haven’t looked at either of these. We were looking at Barbary or Southernmost. Does anyone know about these two places?

Are you looking for a place that has a beach specifically?

My wife would prefer being able to just walk to the beach from our room. She wouldn’t want to drive or bike in case she needs to go back to the room for anything.

As others have said, the beaches in Key West aren’t that great and the ones on hotel properties are pretty small. They’re all man made. Key West isn’t at all a beach town in the sense you think of the panhandle or Orange Beach (and certainly not like your original Jamaica trip). If the beach is important to y’all, you should look more to Fort Lauderdale or Miami.
You really won’t be sitting on a beach all day in Key West, especially not one at a hotel. It will be cramped and won’t be that enjoyable.

The beach at The Reach is natural, nice, and private to the hotel. It is rather small, but it wasn't crowded when I was there just before New Years Day, though people still do the crummy thing where they go out early and put towels in chairs to reserve them for later.
If you can afford it, or if you have a bunch of Hilton points like I did, then I really recommend it for a Key West beach stay.

That’s the best one but still if OP is looking for a pretty lazy vacation where they mostly just sit on the beach during the days, Key West ain’t it. I love Key West for a million reasons but the beaches aren’t one

Southernmost
Stayed here recently. They have a small beach area but it's pretty crowded. They also have a long pier over the water that you can layout on. They have 3 pools and one is heated. The rooms are pretty nice, but it can get pricey real quick if you eat/drink at their bars on site, plus parking and the resort fees are pretty high. The location can't be beat though if you're wanting to go to Duval. Overall I enjoyed it a lot but probably would still try somewhere different next time
