I was at that 1970 game, having just returned home from three years in the Army. Four of us drove all night from Hammond, La. As I was leaving the game after that heartbreaking loss, I remember an Irish fan saying, "Man if you all play this tough in our house, I dread going to Tiger Stadium next year." LSU won that game by something like 3 or 4 touchdowns.

I went to both games. Prior to the 1970 game the Chicago Tribune touted the game as a battle between an unstoppable force (ND) and immovable object (LSU). But the writers there weren’t knowledgeable about the SEC....they thought Tulane was still in the conference. The weather was reasonably good that day.....no rain. In the first quarter ND almost scored but lost a fumble inside the five yard line. The battle went back and forth until 2 or 3 questionable interference calls were made against LSU at the end of the fourth quarter which allowed ND to kick the winning field goal. The next year in Baton Rouge LSU’s defense was phenomenal. Ronnie Estay was that immovable object and accounted for many stops. And the offense put up 28 points to win by 20 points.

I was also at the field house to watch the game. I was a student living in the stadium above the coaches office. It was like being at the game it was so loud. Including the boos for the terrible interference calls. Ronnie Estay was the man. Our defense was one of the best in the nation. Payback the next year was sweet. I just wish Theisman would have still been there. His arrogance to “change” the pronunciation of his name to rhyme with Heisman was too much for me.

I remember listening to that game on the radio. Heartbreaker, but we got revenge in Tiger Stadium the next year. Big time

A couple of short blurbs about the 1970 game and the 1971 game from a college football reference book:

That is awesome BT. My late Dad was at that game, and it was until the day he died one of his best memories. I would ask him to re-tell it often.

As I recall he said Bert Jones also hit Al Coffee in stride on a long bomb that would have been a TD but Coffee dropped.

He passed in 2009 but for a long time he said that was the best game he ever attended.

If I remember right their was an extremely questionable pass interference call that put the Irish in range for the winning field goal.

Listened in to John Ferguson calling the BPB in 1970.
Rushed the field in 1971.

I was in North Carolina. Tried for tix for a month. Found some from guy with alum group NYC. Was to meet at gate before game. My Dad flew from Florida and jumped in to my new Camaro ss midnight Friday. Drove/flew to South Bend. Late. No tix! Saw 2 little boys who had somebody's tickets and got them. You think that picture looked bad, you should have seen it in color as the song goes. Restroom floor was dirt.

Damn real football though. Warren Capone, it's okay! One of the best ever played by Tigers. What a time to live!!!!
