Mangas Hire Question

Why wasn’t Russ Calloway considered for this roll?
I’m all for rolling the dice, shooting for the stars but why not promote someone like Russ from within the system into a roll like this?
It just seems to me we hired two guys that will be boom or bust. Shooting from the hip, hoping for the best. Lots of upside but a gamble.

Here’s the deal. Callaway is clearly respected in the building. He’s good with QBs. All that being said, he clearly doesn’t have enough clout to be the OC. So we brought in someone else.
Since the OC is Peetz, he gets to dictate who he wants to bring in to help implement and execute his scheme. That guy is DJ Mangas. When you bring in an OC and tell him he has full control, part of that is giving him the liberty to get who he needs to succeed. It doesn’t matter what we think of him, it matters what Peetz does.

From what I remember, a few players (including TJ Finley) mentioned him by name in press interviews, lauding his help in game preparation. I specifically recall TJ shouting out Russ after the South Carolina game, after which Coach O was asked about Russ' role with the QBs and how he helped TJ. Same thing may have happened with Max, but I can't be 100% sure of it.
Not to mention, there was a video of Russ hitting the Griddy in the locker room after one of the games.

Did you not realize Mangas was an analyst at LSU last year under Brady? Seems like he would be more familiar with the system than Callaway considering he learned directly under Brady for 2 years.
