Hard to believe that it has been 33 years! As a junior in high school, I got to watch him play for the Jazz in an exhibition game in Birmingham. It was one of those "once in a lifetime" events. Would love to know what he would have done in the 3-point shot era!

They're saying the reason he didn't go to NC State is that he didn't qualify academically under ACC rules. This is the first I heard of that. I always thought it was because we hired his dad as Head Coach.

I was told by someone that knew Pete and had a class with him, that Pete usually set the "curve" on most test with the highest score. So I would not think he did not qualify academically.

I remember one year the fair came to B.R. Pete was either a sophomore or junior that year and took his girlfriend to fair. Of course he ended up at the "free throw" booth and won his date 2 or three giant stuffed animals.. He had a crowd surrounding him in no time. People were trying to pay him to take their turn and win so they could give their dates a stuffed animal. The operator finally caught on to who he was dealing with and banned him from his booth the rest of the fair's time in B.R. Good times then!

I would’ve love to see him in today’s game. I would’ve love to know what his scoring average would’ve been in the NBA with the three-point line. I know the older guys on here went to games like me and can tell you that his greatness with a basketball is still indescribable. You haven’t really seen complete greatness on a court unless you saw Peter Press Maravich.

As a basketball player, his talent defined him as a player. He was an incredible athlete who worked hard at his trade, self professed 8 hrs a day in the summer as a teenager. But it's his maturation as a man that's really impressive, too. Late in his professional career he was a hard core alcoholic. I once saw him down a fifth of Jack Daniels post game, sitting by himself at the bar where his older brother Ronnie was the manager. Yet, he turned his life around, found God, and became a great father & husband.

I watched him play in the Cow Palace when I was a kid. I got him to sign a 10-12 page paper book I had about him. I still have the book, BUT I cut the damn autograph out of the book and pinned it to my wall. I have that 2” x 2” autograph and a photo of Pete framed. But, I wish I hadn’t cut that autograph out of the book.
Interestingly, the autograph says: Pistol Pete 1971

My dad went to school with Press when he was getting his masters. We picked Press up at the airport in NO when he came in to interview with LSU. Pete was never going anywhere but where ever Press was coaching period.
Glad he came to LSU.

I saw his first game for LSU in Hammond playing Southeastern. He was a magician with a basketball, hard to follow his passes. I think he pumped in 65, absolutely amazing.

Was given a ticket and saw him play a game in the old " cow barn". Loved to see him on a fast break with the basketball, such a magician, would hit his teamates in the head with his passes.
