I saw this movie for the first time last night and I am still depressed. I agree with the critics in saying that it was incredibly well made, the acting was brilliant, and the cinematography was amazing. But, the story . . .

I got the point of the movie and I think that it was probably praised because it didn't follow the normal formulas for movies, but at the same time, it leaves you hollow inside to have the movie end the way that it did. Too much evil.

Kind of like Seven in a way.

Thoughts?

I really liked the movie, but at the end and at other times during the movie I found myself saying "wtf just happened?"

But i don't think seven was half as depressing as ncfom.
Incredibly well made but way harsh

i think that the acting was amazing at times. the best scenes, in my opinion, were the more conversational pieces with tommy lee jones, as well as the longer dialogues with anton.

but as far as for the plot of the movies goes, i was very disappointed. the one thought that recurred in my mind throughout the movie is "where is this going?"/"where are you taking me?". i don't really see what the true point or message of the movie was.

i just think that the cinematography of the film, as well as the flashes of great acting, are not enough to justify the hype that came with this movie. when i want to see a movie such as this, i expect to be engaged by the movie's overall message. in this case, it was a message that was either too weak for me to detect or totally lost on me (which i wouldn't put past me).

NCFOM was very enjoyable for me except the ending, but I can deal with that considering it was the Coen Bros. and I halfway expected an ending like that. I loved everything about Seven, the ending evoked anger in me I did'nt realize I had, that's how I know it was great.

The ending was almost straight from the book, though. The book went into more detail with Sheriff Bell's character and his relationship with his uncle, that the movie glossed over, but as far as the bit with Carla Jean and Anton, and then the car accident... straight from the book.

I thought it was kinda refreshing to see a movie done where the cops don't get their man. The good guy doesn't make it out alive, etc... because that's life sometimes.

The scene in the gas station was like an old Twilight Zone turned up to 11. Love the Coens.

I would have to agree. Coen brothers have made plenty of better films, IMO.

I thought the 1st half of the movie was literally as good as it's possible for a movie to be. I was sweating with the suspense. The 2nd half was more uneven, and I'll admit to being kinda pissed the first time I saw it. But upon some reflection and a rewatching, I now just think it's a 4 star movie worthy of all the accolades.

I don't think that was the message at all. Not even close.

The point of the movie was the title. Also, Tommy Lee Jones' two scenes with his uncle and his wife pretty much sum it up.

For me, the point of the movie was that the struggle for good and evil is neither a recent development nor is it likely to ever go away. Moreover, even as good flourishes, evil flourishes as well. People always wish for some kind of "post-history" world in which evil has been vanquished, but it ain't gonna happen.

There's all sorts of other tertiary and tangential themes worth discussing too.

On top of that, evil always progresses into a form that is worse than it was before....thus, those who spent their lives fighting it will just die a disappointing death knowing that their efforts are for naught.

One generation spends their lives fighting evil with a knife, only to die watching evil show up to the fight with a gun....
