INJURY REPORT AS OF JANUARY 4

Pelicans:
Sindarius Thornwell: Out (Health and Safety Protocols),
Wenyen Gabriel: Day To Day (Right Knee)
Pacers:
Jeremy Lamb: Out (Knee),
T.J. Warren: Out (Foot),
Goga Bitadze: Out (Right ankle),

New Orleans Pelicans
quote:
A coaching change from Alvin Gentry to Stan Van Gundy completely flipped the Pelicans’ style of play.
Last season, pace and space was the philosophy as New Orleans’ Pace of 103.7 ranked second-fastest and their 36.9 3-point attempts per game ranked seventh-most, per Basketball Reference. This year these numbers fell to 26th with a 98.5 Pace and 20th with 33.2 3-point attempts per game.
Transitioning to a slower style, the Pelicans focused on rebounding and defense to guide them to victory. While only six games have been played, this change seems to be working. New Orleans has shot up in defensive efficiency, currently ranking fourth with a mark of 103.5. Preventing second-chance points is one reason for the defensive improvement, as they allow the fewest offensive rebounds in the league.
Indiana Pacers
quote:
Ranking sixth in net rating with a mark of +7.4, the Pacers have performed as one of the best teams in the NBA. All-Star guard Victor Oladipo at full strength has been the catalyst to the Pacers’ improvement.
Last year Oladipo did his best to return from injury during the season. Unfortunately, his play would show he was just not there, as his Player Efficiency Rating (PER) was the lowest of his career. Now, at full strength, his play has bounced back and he currently has the second-highest PER of his career at 20.4.
Oladipo’s return to full strength also helped the play of starting point guard Malcolm Brogdon. Last season, Brogdon was thrust into the lead guard role. His career-low 43.8% field goal percentage showed his discomfort. With Oladipo back, Brogdon thrives as the compliment guard, averaging 22.2 points on 53.1% shooting.

This will be a good test for the Pelicans. On the surface, the Pacers are a tough matchup for us. They shoot the 3 well and have 2 big men to guard the interior.
They are playing really well so far. They are 6th in offensive efficiency, 9th in defensive efficiency, and 19th in pace.
Sabonis is off to a fantastic start. 21 points per game on 57% shooting including 57% from 3 on 2.3 attempts per game. That percentage will revert to the mean but this guy can shoot it. He is also averaging 6.7 assists per game. I’m guessing we put Adams on him and Zion on Turner. Does Sabonis’ ability to shoot take Adams out of the paint and allow driving lanes for others? He opens up so much for the Pacers on offense.
Brogdon is also playing great. 22 points per game and is shooting 45% on 6.3 attempts per game. He is also averaging 6.3 assists and only 2 turnovers. More of the same for Oladipo. 20 points per game and is shooting 46% from 3 on 6.6 attempts per game. He is averaging 4.4 assists and only 1.8 turnovers per game.
Myles Turner, a polarizing player amongst Pels fans, is shooting only 26% from 3 on 5.2 attempts per game. However, he leads the league in blocks by a healthy margin with 3.7 per game. Justin Holiday is also playing well. Aaron Holiday is starting in place of TJ Warren and has really not looked good so far.
Things I am watching tonight:
Does the Pacers shooting revert to the mean?
Do Lonzo and Bled make life difficult for Brogdon and Oladipo when Adams is drawn out of the lane?
Does Adams effectively guard Sabonis all over the floor? (Can anyone effectively guard Sabonis right now?)
Can Zion, BI, and Bled get Sabonis into foul trouble? (He is averaging 3.8 fouls per game)
Can JJ find his outside shot?

How are Sabonis and Turner at screening?
We struggled mightily against Phoenix in large part because they keep drawing Adams out of the lane with screens on our guards (and otherwise also blew right past them at times, I think because they were so worried about screens coming).
This would have Zion collapse and he was terrible closing out on the 3. We eventually adjusted by the damage was done and it is a good blue print to follow in trying to get us out of what we want to do on defense.
With some good guards and a shooting big I wonder if the Pacers try to follow that trend if their big men are good in the screen game.
Edit:
Looked it up and apparently Sabonis is VERY good at screening. A big part of why their guards are so good by many accounts.
May be a long night. We are going to have to be on our shite and ready to adjust.

Sabonis leads the league in screen assists per game with 8.3.
For reference, Adams is 9th with 5.0.

I've noticed people are writing off indy like we should beat them the same way we should beat okc and Charlotte.
Indy is a solid team that will probably be 4th or better in the east

Personally I had this as a loss but plausible win when we did our pre-season schedule forecast. Think Indiana is a sneaky good team that matches up pretty ideally to us, but is diverse in the ways they can attack us.
I think we are going to need a good game from all of our guards and I hope this trend of away teams being hurt by the condensed schedule and travel holds true.
It’s a winnable game, and as long as we don’t lose like Phoenix I’m ok if the loss looks like we put in a good fight and show some progress.

I can't find a better term as I don't think it's a "big game" in the literal sense, but it would be great to get this W then have a legit shot to be 7-2 going into that brutal road trip.
If so, we could come out of that road trip at 10-6 if we hit 3-4, and even if we lost 5 of 7 on teh road trip, we'd still be a respectable 9-7 given the tough schedule.
I just feel like a win tonight could set us up nicely before the road trip.

The 2nd best team we will have played so far IMO.
Pacers are good. This will be a very tough game.

Adams will have to stray away from the basket quite often to cover their bigs. Seems like a touch matchup for us.

pels at #9 in this weeks power rankings

Win or lose, we should learn a lot about our team and come away from this game with something to chew on. BI can keep us in this game. We need JJ to break his slump and for Zion to be effective inside and picking up fouls.

With Warren out, we need to capitalize and get this W.
It’ll be tough, but if we limit turnovers again we’ll be in it.

Here's a little something to spark up this thread and get a bunch of hate replies coming back my way lol...
I'm not saying which player is better, I'm merely pointing out data and focusing more on the last 3 points of comparison for each player.
Steven Adams:
10 points per game
9 reobunds per game
1 block per game
.648 TS%
Team is really good when he's on the court
Team is really bad when he's off the court
Already one of the more beloved Pels of recent memory
Derrick Favors:
9 points per game
10 rebounds per game
1 block per game
.620 TS%
Team was really good when he's on the court
Team was really bad when he's off the court
Is one of the more hated Pels of recent memory

I didn’t mind favors, but adams’ effort is different. I’m a big fan of effort, hence my love affair with hart. Adams busts his arse. Favors was just kinda doing his thing.

And I know some posters will read too much into that comparison, it is what it is, but like I said, I'm more so intrigued on how one is so beloved and the other so hated despite putting up similar stats and the team looking good when they play and bad when they don't.
