Looking to purchase a shotgun for duck hunting. How big of a difference is 3 or 3.5 inch? There is more available in the 3 inch and they seem to be cheaper.

3" If you can hit them, you can kill piles with 3". If you can't, wont' matter.

If I were buying a new shotgun today it would absolutely be a 3" gun, and might be a 20 Ga that I'd shoot Boss in.

If you’re shooting more than 3”, you need to get them closer or stop shooting

You do you, but I duck hunt with 2-3/4" shells. I used to shoot 3" but I didn't like the recoil for what seemed to me like no better performance.

3.5" 12g shells are an abomination. Get a 10ga if you need that kind of payload.

I keep a few 3.5" with me for swimmers or the occasional opportunity at a goose. Otherwise its overkill.

Eta: if you're on a deliberate goose hunt, then I would use them.

Right now you may as well not even bring a gun because there's no damn ducks

I'm hoping the consensus here is 3" though because that's what I just bought last week.

Unless you’re going to be hunting mostly in flooded open fields where shots might be a bit further then 3.5in is pointless. It actually hurts you if you’re hunting in flooded timber and ducks come in close because the pattern is tighter and makes it hard to hit the ducks. 3in should be enough for most purposes, even in open fields if you hide yourself well and are a decent caller to get the ducks to come close

You do know that you can shoot 2.75" shells in a 3" gun?

I only shoot 2.75" shells and kill just fine.

For strictly ducks 3.0 is all I ever shoot. I have a 3.5 gun and use 3.5s for (pigs turkeys deer and hogs).
I have other shotguns but use my bennelli sbe the most and if I had to buy another it would be the same in 3.5.

3” is plenty. Hell I use a 20ga 90% of the time now. The only reason to buy a 3.5” gun imho is that they hold their value better it seems and if you’re the type that never brings enough shells when you hunt and are always needed to bum so shells. Not saying that’s you but every hunting group has “that” guy lol. Myself I’d be buying a 3” 20ga

Buy a 20guage and shoot 3" Boss shells or Tungsten with a full choke.

I have only ever shot 2.75...

The few boxes of 3" I shot didn't do me any different.

My favorite gun is a 3". I put 2.75 through it anyway.

Lol I used to hunt with some ol boys like that, the only reason they didn’t hunt ducks with a 6in 8gauge was they couldn’t find one!!

Agree with getting better shells but still use 12 ga in 3 inch.
I have Beretta 391 urika in 3 inch and now use Franchi Affinity 3 inch Elite. Love this gun. Never thought would go away from Beretta but both kill with 3 inch including Specs with good shells.

If you can't hit em with a 3" #4, then a 3-1/2" ain't gonna help you. My semi-auto only shoots up to 3", and I've killed plenty of ducks and geese with it. My pump shoots up to 3-1/2", so when I shoot that one for water fowl, I still use mostly 3", but sometimes I'll slip a 3-1/2" in the for my third shot just in case there is still one in range after unloading my first two shots.

3 1/2" shells have the same charge in them, just more shot. So, technically you are trying to push more mass with the same force. Only real possible advantage is that the pattern might be fuller.
