Of these three; Freeman, Raymond, Mason.

Marcus Freeman is young. He’s coached a mediocre team to a NY6 bowl with the #11 defense and #7 scoring defense. His resume is all Big10 and smaller schools in the B10 area. But, he’s young and apparently recruits love him. So building bridges in the south probably won’t be a problem.

Derek Mason. I like the guy, but his record is pretty bad. An 0-8 start to a season and a 27-54 record at Vandy. It’s gotta be hard to recruit/coach at Vanderbilt. But that’s a terrible record. I haven’t looked at his the team defense stats during his Time there, but I would be shocked if they’re very good. Also, he seems like a big personality. I wonder if that could cause problems. Finally, with a team like LSU behind him, could he recruit on par with top SRC programs? I have no idea.

Corey Raymond. We all know him, most of us like him. By now, he and O must at least get along on a professional level. Excellent recruiter. With a 2020 season of letdowns, the young CBs had some serious flashes of greatness. Ricks & Ward looked as good as any underclass duo in the country. I could be wrong, but he coached Stingley. Former players (Fehoko and Ryan Clark) are lobbying for him. He is an elite recruiter. But, does he want the job? Some on this board have said he’s happy where he’s at.

I’m just a fan, but my rakings of these three would be;
Raymond
Freeman
Mason

The (serious) disagreeing/fighting amongst coaches has to stop. I’m thinking Pelini & Canada. Raymond has been with O for a while now, Freeman is very young and probably pretty adaptable. I could see Mason being another Pelini type where he the HC and other coaches are rarely on the same page.

Just a few thoughts. What do y’all think about these three?

To be clear. I’m commenting on an article from TigerWire LINK /

Raymond should not be a candidate. He has never called a defense before. Freeman is far and away the best candidate of the three.

Interesting how those were the 3 you mention, it’s almost like they all have something in common.
What about Ryan Nielson or Brad White? Why didn’t you mention those guys?

Raymond has 3 5stars in his secondary this year and it was the worst secondary in college football! So the logical move is to promote him to DC?!?!

Not saying we should hire Raymond, but in fairness the safeties were what screwed the defense and those were coached by Busch. Hopefully Raymond takes back over the entire secondary

I feel Busch was hired to be the safeties coach under Aranda bc he was more comfortable with the zone scheme than Raymond was/is. I really don’t like the idea of having both of them and being able to pass off blame if they indeed did. One DB coach should be able to get on the same page as the DC and coach up all 4/5 guys.

They didn't run too much zone in the secondary

I’m aware, and Raymond prefers man from all the places I’ve read/heard, so that was kind of my point.

Which one is over 70, hasn’t been a DC in over a decade, and thinks spread offenses are just a fad that can be defended with just a little gumption?

That one

My apologies. I don’t think Raymond is a serious candidate and I don’t believe Mason, for all his strengths, fits O’s vision of an attacking 3-4 D. I’ve heard if he went 3-4 at all it’d be with a more attack oriented guy like Brad White out of Kentucky. But there sure has been a lot of buzz around Mason, so I get why people gravitate toward the possibility. I’d think Nielson would be his top choice, especially seeing as how it’s the name we heard from Mike D, the fact that he works an attacking 4-2-5 and the fact that he’s with the Saints. However, I’m guessing that the reports that he wants to stay in the NFL are probably true.

Are you saying with Aranda we didn’t run much zone?

Brad White’s resume is lacking. His NFL experience does no always translate to SEC success, we all know that. He’s coached a a bottom tier UK team. The fact is, we can do better.

I don’t follow the Saints religiously, how dug in is Nielsen with the Saints? I do like his run defense, though.

I mean Freeman is the obvious choice.

I’m okay with Raymond bc I think Mason would be bad and we need some continuity on that side of the ball

For the most part, the secondary was terrible due to freshman & sophomores and the abysmal play of our safeties. They were out of position for entire games. Also, whatever the hell Pelini was scheming.

Dude, UKs D has been lights out the last 2 years with far inferior talent! They were the 13th best defense in the country last year and top 25 this year!

True. And it does worry me that he might not coach the DLine, LB’s as well as he’s coached the secondary. Though, he’s been around LSU for almost 9 years. A lot of schools would jump at the chance to get him for DC.

I said earlier that I don’t know much about him.

Now I do, thanks.
