Why was James Franklin able to win at Vandy but Mason couldn't?

I keep seeing people saying Mason didn't have the talent but can still coach defense.
Franklin came in as an offensive guy with the same talent level and was able to win at Vandy.
Vandys defense was terrible every single year under Mason.
If he was half way as good as a defensive coach as some of you think why weren't they better?

Because he had better talent. How is anyone's guess.

Why is Aranda struggling at Baylor despite coaching the hell out of a defense at LSU?
Talent.
Talent.

Mason did go to two bowls with Vandy so they weren’t always terrible. Franklin just had the good sense to leave as soon as he could.

Allowing all the rapes was a big advantage for Franklin

That’s not exactly true.
His defenses in 2015 and 2016 were 22nd and 34th in scoring defense.
Although idk why Bob Shoop isn’t a candidate.
He has Vandy routinely in the top 50. Miss State was elite. He was good at Oenn State.
He’s a fricking safeties coach.
Runs a 4-3

According to 24/7 franklins recruiting classes 2011-2013 was ranked 12th in the sec each year....

So not all
How about Stanford’s defense when his job was to coordinate

Vandy is far more interested in it’s woke message now.
It strives to lead the SEC in wokeness rather than be competitive in competition.

His best seasons were:
2013 when UGA was a 5-loss team, Tennessee was a 7-loss team , Florida was an 8-loss team and Kentucky was a 10-loss team.
2012 when he lost to all 3 SEC East teams (UGA, UF, USCe)that were ranked higher. The 5 remaining SEC teams he faced were a combined 6-34 in SEC play (3-34 if you account for 3 vacated Ole Miss victories)

You’ll notice that his defenses got much worse once the spread came to the SEC...
Didn’t Vandy have a big problem with opt outs as well? Red Flag.

He had some legit offensive weapons on that 2012 team.

Franklin and/or his inner circle (assistants, etc.) have be very good at evaluating talent
Not a great game day coach but he is pretty good at finding over achieving 3 stars at State ( probably found over achieving 2 stars at Vandy)

Mason took them to two bowls. Before 2010 Vandy made 4 bowl games since the 1950's. Franklin did a great job! That being said, When he left he took everything with him. Mason pretty much started from scratch. Winning at Vandy isn't easy.

DC =/= HC.
Some people aren't cut out to be HC

Why was James Franklin able to win at Vandy and literally no one else has would be a better question. Why is Mason singled out?
Mason got hired for a reason, didn’t he?
