Why does U. Bolt get a free pass?

I am somewhat surprised that Bolt's showboating prior to finishing did not get more negative ettention and backlash--other than the cursory "would he have ran a sub .60 time?".

I can only imagine the outcries of "classless, "poor sport", "showboat", etc if such behavior occurred in aother events. I am almost certain we would hear backlashes from fans and media alike if a swimmer with a large lead raised the #1 sign out of the water before touching the wall, if the Frenchman fencer who had a commanding lead in the finals over an American yesterday danced around prior to his last few points, if a diver who was so far ahead, shouted "yipee" during his dive, if a gymnast who was so far ahead held up the #1 sign while on the final floor exercise, or if any other athlete (barring basketball) pulled such a stunt.

Nothing against Bolt--other than the pre-finish showboating. What he did was astounding. For some reason, this just seems more acceptable in track than any other sport in the Olympics. Finally, although Bolt is not an AMerican, this seems far more prevalent in AMerican sports in gerenal--but that is a different topic altoghther. Just my brief after lunch rant.

I don't think people care because he's doing it at his own detriment. Obviously, high stepping and clubbing your chests with your fists only slow you down. Another reason is that... the Olympics are a spectacle to begin with. He's obviously trying to be an entertainer.

Hell, if people didn't actually like showboating, Chad Johnson wouldn't be the cult-figure he is now.

I am not commenting on what his showboating did to his time. I am commenting on his showboating prior to the finish in gerenal and why he got a free pass on it.

it isnt hard for me at all, when he looked over and didnt see anyone else in his vision he knew he won the race so he didnt care about his time after that

why is that hard to understand for you?

I am not totally convinced of that. I see a heck of a lot of 'acceptable' showboating in track-- more so than any other sport, barring American basketball and football. I can't imagine it would fly nearly as much in other sports.

Showboating is acceptable in today's sports. I don't see anything wrong with what he did. Hey, if you got a problem with it, run faster.

I am sure the massive Jamaican media was outraged and raked him over the coals in Kingston

or maybe Jamaicans don't really give a shite and the American media doesnt care because he isnt from America so they don't have an "ugly American" angle to the story that they love

You think it would be acceptable at the Olympics in the other examples I gave? I think they would be called out quickly starting with the announcers and commentators. I think many here would agree.

I was surprised to see the Chinese chick let out a yell and pump her arms a little bit before attempting her 2nd vault. Of course she then landed on her knees, but I would say I construed that as "showboating." So I think it's becoming a little more acceptable. Not to mention, these Olympians probably feel that they're only relevant once every 4 years... why not make it memorable?

I mean personally I think it was dumb to showboat that early

but getting this up in arms over seems dumber

I don't think an American woul have been called out either, at least not in a track sprint event.

He wasn't really showboating so much as he was coasting. There's a HUGE difference.

I could be wrong, but I think she was psyching herself up.

OMG a 22 year old guy from a minor country just killed the field in the premier sprinting event and he pounds his chest a bit! Screw that, Bolt is awesome. For every Tyson Gay you need a Usain Bolt to make a sport worth watching.

It was not the slowing down so much. It was the chest beating, arms wide open that was the boating.

Because his uniform isn't red, white and blue.

And seriously, sportmanship has been dying a slow death ever since the days of Muhammed Ali.
