Drills for rotating through

Does anyone have a good drill recommendation for rotating through the shot as opposed to swinging with mostly arms?

extend your arms through contact and rotate your hips so your belly button is facing your target. left shoulder higher than right shoulder on follow through. (if you’re right handed).

How do you know you need this?
Posted on 12/15/20 at 5:22 pm to Tyga Woods
Because I feel like I’m swinging all arms. Swing does not feel smooth and effortless.

Video your swing and post it

ETA not being an arse. Just hate to see someone ruin what they have by chasing something they may not need.
What ball flight issues are you having?

There are several drills involving alignment rods and your belt loops that address this. Also could get a G box and get scooby

I have this issue from time to time. For me it’s really not getting my hips through, my hands get out in front and the result is a big high hook. Not a duck hook, but a giant draw that ends up 20-30 yards offline left.
It looks stupid as shite, and I’m not one for trying to copy what any one pro does, but Matthew Wolfs little pre swing hitch helps remind my body to get the hips going. I don’t do it quite as dramatic as him however.

I definitely have this problem and I do a drill that puts an alignment stick sticking out of the ground about 6ft in front and a foot or two left of my target line and the thought is to make swings and get my right shoulder over towards that stick. Pretty simple sounding but when you forget to get a full turn, it’s noticeable that my shoulder isn’t pointed towards the stick.

Pull draw. Not a bad hook left, but consistently left.

I have the same issue. My ball flight is low, I really want to get it higher even if at the cost of distance. I seem to hit the ball thin more often than not also.

Assuming you’re right handed, put an alignment stick in the ground about 6 inches behind your left heel. Put another alignment stick through your front two belt loops with the majority of the stick sticking out to your left. Slow motion swing and try to get the stick in your belt loops to make contact with the stick in the ground at the same time you’re making contact with the ball. Hope that makes sense.
Make sure you don’t compromise correct posture and body angles to get that extra rotation.

I'd video and post so you dont ingrain bad habits. I say that because I struggle with not rotating through and my miss is a slice. When I can rotate through the ball, I have a nice straight/baby draw.
Golf is weird.

I second the G box as well as the V1 balance mat
My 12 year old daughter is really compressing the ball and adding distance once she started using this and her rotation - the G Box really helped with the arms and the mat really helped her maximize her rotation and force at impact - adding distance height as well as consistency... her driver is now carrying 210ish...

Same here. Even with short irons I tend to push to the right if I don’t rotate back enough.

Ok, stay with me here lol...
I had a problem rotating my hips too little because I rotate my hips too much. Lol. Let me explain.
Played only baseball/softball til I was 30. Didn’t pick up a golf club til I was 35. I was a DEAD PULL hitter. Especially in softball. Going oppo meant I’d take the pitcher’s head off on a pitch 6 inches out off the plate. I was not the “hit em where they ain’t” guy.
When I started playing golf, it carried over. I started to feel as if I was all hips and no arms. Like my arms couldn’t keep up. It led to me purposely trying to rotate less, thinking it would help “stay connected”. Wasn’t til after I developed this bad habit that I realized that that powerful hip rotation was the driver that pulled everything into place and kept me in sync. When it’s on point, I can feel that “whip-like” feeling. There’s no thought necessary for anything else. It’s like “the zone” and for me, usually only happens on the range Lol
Soooo, to answer your question (sorry for the long backstory), in order to bring that natural hip turn I always had back, I had a little cadence I’d say either in my head or outloud. I also had an issue initiating the backswing so it went like this...
“frooom the chesssttt(from the start to top of back swing), HIPS(to remind me to initiate hips)”. Silly...but it worked for me. Immediately. Could be cause that was my natural tendency so it came back easy. IDK
Now, I’ll certify this post with the acknowledgement that I still suck pretty bad at golf and probably shouldn’t give ANYBODY advice. But, if it’s hip rotation you want, I can clear out a third base dugout like nobody’s business. (Could also be cause I was easily fooled by anything not a fastball lol)

Seriously though, I can break it down in a body movement POV better than a golf POV.
Look at issues in your swing from 3 possible faults
1. The ability to do it - can your body even move that way?
2. The know how to do it - learning the technique correctly
3. The ability to do it dam near autotomically - perfect practice
Golf instructors are your #2, then you go do #3. But if you don’t have #1 (and it’s always overlooked, ignored or left for somebody else to fix) you’re not ever gonna get full potential out of your body.
So, If “reminding” yourself to rotate (a way to reset #3) like i said in the previous post doesn’t make it click, then check #1 then #2. (Maybe you can’t, maybe you don’t know how)
If you feel you CAN’T rotate hips in the follow through (you can’t get them pointing down range), you likely have some issues with internal rotation in your left hip. Turning the left foot out to start could help.
Side note: How much are you rotating them the opposite direction in the backswing? On takeaway, I drive my left foot forward, left foot back. It gives me about a 10° “cheat” in the hips, helping my t-spine out with getting my shoulders to about 95-100°... more if I’m drinking lol. At the top, I feel “wound up” and if I’m in sync that day, brain tells hips “go” and everything from there on up follows along nice and smooth. (Seeing Haley’s comet is less rare)
I’m no swing coach so I’ll defer to the gurus here on the work arounds/“cheats” or drills. But I understand how the body is supposed to function, when/why it’s not and how to fix it.

Put an alignment stick on your shaft where it sticks out the grip end mostly. Start where the shaft/stick is on your left hip. Make half to 3/4 swings with the stick never touching your left side.
