I don't think this will happen, but I get a feeling this hire is going to be a name no one has talked about yet.

Leipold has been successful everywhere, and flat out dominant in lower levels. He and Allen Greene were together at Buffalo.

Auburn fans, what would you think? He's never coached in the south, so that could be an issue, and really don't know how he recruits, if at all. But he's definitely been successful everywhere.

Leipold will be an interesting name to watch this offseason. My godfather graduated from Mount Union, so I was familiar with Leipold at Whitewater. He was the only guy who ever consistently gave Larry Kehres fits, so I think he's a hell of a coach.

That said, MAC coaches du jour rarely seem to be successful when they get to a P5 job for some reason. I think he'd be a better fit somewhere like Illinois, or Cincy if Fickell gets hired away. Auburn would have to get turned down by a bunch of candidates before they went his direction IMO.

This is a good point.

I’m mainly just looking at the connection between him and Greene. Connections and comfort level are a big deal in coaching searches. Especially when it’s your first big hire like it is for Greene. But that’s assuming the big money guys at Auburn are going to let him make the call, which I guess is a long shot.

I think some place like Illinois would be a good spot for him. Either that or Iowa St if Campbell takes a job somewhere else.

Both would be great fits for him. The "top" I could see him going to would be VT

It's definitely a big deal, so I think your case for him has more merit than Auburn fans likely want to entertain.

If Greene had a longer track record as an AD, he'd probably be given a little more leeway to make his own call, but as you said, this is his first big hire. He won't go rogue on the boosters' wishes/demands now.

Agreed, but I also think that it would be a benefit to auburn if he did. Not necessarily to hire Leipold, but in general. They could benefit from their big money folks being knocked down a peg I think

Brian Kelly and Matt Campbell would like a word.

and Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, and Ara Parseghian did okay coming from the MAC.

That's why I said rarely. Kelly and Campbell are the recent outliers, and Kelly made a stop in Cincinnati before South Bend. I'll even give you Urban, but he made a stop in Utah first.

I think the last coach to jump directly from the MAC to a P5 school and win a conference title was Randy Walker at Northwestern.

When you have to go all the way back to these guys, I believe I've made my point.
