Hey guys, I'm in Mandeville and want to build a cypress slab coffee table. Any suggestions on where to buy a slab?

Thanks in advance.

I've been dabbling in this for a couple of months. Look on FB Marketplace. There's a guy in Franklinton that has good prices, ($6/board Ft). He gets logs from the Pearl River and cuts them himself. Some are dried and some are not. You will need to get it planed.

Also, Jones and Jones in Batchelor, La, west of St Francisville has a mill with a wide selection and they will plane it for you. Their sinker cypress is $8/board ft.

The guys in Madisonville seem pretty good. I've just had no experience with them.

I would say the most important thing is getting it planed.

You will need access to a belt sander and orbital sander and you will need to decide how you want to finish it. I used linseed oil.

I'll be happy to build you one. I'm in Crystal Springs, Ms.

Good luck.

What would be the difference between linseed oil and something like spar varnish?

Linseed is a preservative, not a permanent coating.

Linseed oil, tung oil, etc. all soak into the wood to offer protection and you apply it by wiping it on and letting it sit a bit, then wiping off the excess and allowing it to dry.

Spar varnish, polyurethanes, lacquers, etc. all are absorbed into the wood and finish drying to form a thin, protective coating with some sheen on the surface of the wood.

This offers more protection to the wood surface, but to me, doesn't allow the wood to look more "natural".

I have a mid 1800's mahogany armoire that when I got it was in terrible condition with the finish being heavily alligatored and full of dirt and dust. After dissolving the old finish to get the wood in pristine condition, I finished it with tung oil and that was over 30 years ago now and it still looks great. An occasional re-application of oil and a wipe down keep it looking like new. I'll never have to strip it again since nothing is on the surface to get old and damaged over time.

As others have said AAA in Madisonville or Manuel cypress off Davidson road in Folsom. Have used both they are great. Can’t go wrong with either of them.

Sure am glad my 2 guys aren't listed here. I like my little secret spot
I have several cypress slabs from the Maurepas swamp that burned decades ago. They are the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen.

Get it big enough so when the live edge trend is gone and it will you can square it up to a normal table

Here's my conference room table. The plants are sitting on wireless charging pop-ups with 110 and USB power as well. First pic was taken last week, right before Thanksgiving lunch.

Made a table for the break room out of the same cross cuts

Working on a desk for my wife, but had shoulder surgery in Sept, so this is where it sits.

Damnit man.

That is amazing.

I’m sure you have folks trying to buy it all the time....but that work is priceless.

Thanks. I'd love to sell it and build another one, but the top alone weighs about 500 pounds.

Epoxy in the gaps are a nice feature. Adding color makes it pop as well.
