I just don’t see how he fits with this team anymore. I assume he will play SG instead of PG but his best ability to to facilitate for others. For a team that needs solid shooters surrounding Zion he just doesn’t seem like a good choice to play off the ball since his shooting is average at best. Maybe they let him bring the ball up instead of Bledsoe but I doubt it. Maybe they use Brandon Ingram in a point-forward role like LA uses LeBron.

My thought was he could facilitate as a point-forward and BI play the SG volume shooter role. But maybe I'm way off, just seems to fit given our roster

37-38% at 6+ 3pa is good

People made a decision on Lonzo as a player before last season, and regardless of his play have kept that opinion. Yes, he was bad in the bubble, but his overall play last season, including his shooting was solid. His defense wasn't great, but IMO that was more of a system issue than an individual issue.

If he doesn't work out in the offball guard role this season, we will move him at the deadline, IMO.

We'll see how he does in the new system.

I just have a feeling he'll be just good enough that there's going to be at least one team that offers him a contract we simply should not match in RFA, and that alone has me thinking we should trade him before the deadline to get value for him instead of walking for nothing.

But we do have up to the deadline, and maybe he surprised and continues to get better, specifically at some of those things he struggled with last season. Turnovers, not driving to the hole, poor in the P&R.

He’s gotta get his ft% up, especially for a guard. 57% last season, best in his 3 seasons.
That’s on him not the system.

I think the reason he's moving to SG is because of his lack of ability to facilitate. He's one of the worst PnR guards in the league, and he drives the fewest amongst any guard in the league. He's essentially just a guy that can spot up (hopefully) and make nice passes.

My biggest worry is his ability to defend. Bledsoe is 5 inches shorter yet has 24 lbs on him. I think athleticism wise he will match up better, but strength wise he will be outmatched.

Let’s see him compete with NAW, Bledsoe and Kira. No favourites. Blank slate. I honestly don’t know how he will rank this year. Good thing with a new coach is that everyone starts at the same place.

To answer the OP:

I would have been very active in trying to move Ball this offseason for a competent SG or SF to some team that believes he is a true PG.

I don't believe in Lonzo and I don't believe he will be worth whatever his next contract is.

Hopefully he does amazing, but I don't see it. Would love to take my own L here.

This is the $64 question as it relates to the Pels. I think they will know if he's a long term piece by the deadline.

NBA execs and GMs: Lonzo is a good player that can play and defend multiple positions, which is valuable

I just assumed Bledsoe would be the 2 even though he’s small...Lonzo as an off-ball player seems pretty worthless to me.

I’d do everything in my power to move on from him.

We need to keep hyping him up regardless if he’s has a future or not.

The narratives were starting to swing on him before he was a disaster in the bubble.

I like Alonzo as a floor general. Ball is a great passer and has a high bbiq. He uses the pass and movement not the dribble to breakdown defenses. He does not need the basketball in his hands which is a great asset.

He is versatile especially as a rebounder. His unselfishness paints a distorted view to his critics. Lonzo needs the right fit. He and Jrue were mismatches on tloffense. Ball needs movement from his teammates to maximize his passing skills.

His game is simple with minimal flash. He makes his teammates better. If he develops a floater he will be the engine that runs the Pelicans for the next decade.
