Rick Beato 10 Underrated Guitar Solos
Posted on 11/11/20 at 1:20 pm

Not going to link but Beato just had his top 10 list for most underrated guitar solos. The list included Tom Sholz, George Harrison, Steve Lukather, Keith Richards and others.
What would be some solos you believe to be underrated?

The first thing that pops into mind is Jake E. Lee's solos on Bark at the Moon.

I did enjoy the video...it had a few surprises, particularly at his #1 underrated solo. I will post the LINK HERE, and I've taken the notes also.
You're welcome!
10. "It's Love" Kings X/Ty Tabor 1990
9. "Maybe I'm Amazed" Paul McCartney and Wings/Denny Laine playing the second solo on Wings Over America 1976
(Is is weird that Mc hired a guitarist whose name rhymes with "Penny Lane?)
8. "Happy" Keith Richards/ Rolling Stones 1972 (Keith sings this song, too)
7. "New Years Day" U2/The Edge 1983 (as much as anything because Edge invented the style)
6. "Spoonman" Soundgarden/Kim Thayil 1994
5. "Day After Day" Badfinger/George Harrison 1971 (I had no idea that was Harrison on Slide)
4. "Just What I Needed" The Cars/Elliot Easton 1978 (made me appreciate this song more)
3. "Don't Fear The Reaper" Blue Oyster Cult/Don "Buck Dharma" Roeser (more cowbell, anyone?)
2. "A Man I'll Never Be" Boston/Tom Scholz 1978 (my personal Boston favorite)
AND FOR THE SURPRISE #1:
1. "Running With the Night" Lionel Richie/Steve Lukather 1978 (he states the cool solo to end the song was cut out on radio play)

By definition, everything King's X does is underrated. I've seen them six or eight times, they always deliver live.

My personal favorite underrated solo? The long album version of Little River Band's It's A Long Way There.
I believe it's Richard Formosa on lead guitar. Best spots are 2:50-3:50 and 4:50 to the end (over 8 minutes long, as opposed to the radio single that was just over 4 minutes).

In Luke's book he tells the story of cutting that solo. He said he went in and asked Richie to play the track back for him. He said he wasn't really trying to lay anything down, just warming up and getting a feel for the song.
When the song came to an end, Luke told Richie that he was ready and to roll it back for him. Richie replied, "we got it, you're done."
Luke said it was super busy and not at all what he would have played if he knew they were recording.

Key word there is underrated. I don't think anything Mark Knopfler plays would be considered underrated.

Btw, that's not Denny Laine on that solo on Maybe I'm Amazed, that's Jimmy Mccullough. Denny played bass on that.
However it's still really good.
