I think there is a Bylaw that states:
Thou shall not hold the Olympics in a Fuggin Shithole.
You can check it if you'd like.

Other than the political oppression, internet censorship, smog, pollution, murder of a U.S. citizen, and the eventual execution of the Chinese gymnast who screwed up on the parallel bars yesterday, I'd say Beijing is doing a GREAT JOB!!!

then why is it in Beijing?
I've been there. Your comparison is so far off base, it's laughable.

seriously, wtf was going through the olympic committee's minds when they decided to go to china?

Not to change subjects, but really, could any other country, U.S. included, have done an opening ceremony like that? Even with "unlimited funding?" Those firework "footsteps" were amazing. Spielberg? Jim Cameron? McG? Lucas? Kevin Smith?(I know...j/k)
Seriously, Beijing was a logical choice to host an Olympics, especially knowing that there would be no limit to funding. I DO know that the 2008 Olympics are directly responsible for the tripling and quadrupling of some construction materials (copper, steel) in the U.S. Right around the time that some of these Olympic venues would have been in the "rough--in" phase(running of plumbing pipes, electrical and communications wires, steel beams) the price of copper tripled. A 250' roll of size 12/2 romex (electrical wire) went from $35-40 to $120 almost literally overnight.

the bad heavily outweighs the good, IMO

China and North Korea are very much alike. Neither can feed their people properly nor give them decent human right - but both put on incredible mass ceremonies.

weather isn't an issue. houston and tampa have a similar climate and were both finalists. beijing weather is equally shitty.

New Orleans hosting the Olympics:
I could see the opening ceremonies now: During the Parade of Nations, the N.O. and La. faithful holding up signs that read: "Show your tits!" The highlight will be when the head of the IOC gets mugged after refusing to pay some guy who told him "where he got his shoes."
Ahh yes, judging a whole city by what you hear from a dumbass tourist.

Funny or not?
WOW, what a Question? The answer is yes, with the right Dream Team....and the city that hosts the olympics gets a big hunk of change from the feds to do it....New Orleans would do well with it...
Two words: Dubious Distinction

Does anyone remember the last international hosted in NOLA? The 1984 World's Fair. What a disaster. Morial(s), Edwards, Lee, Landrieu clan all got very rich off of that event.
Come to think of it, do they even have World's Fairs anymore or did the NOLA debacle systematically end it forever.

new orleans couldn't handle the world's fair .. why on earth would you think it could handle the olympics ?

Superbowl and Final Fours is not even in the same ball park as the Olympics.
Right now, Lexington is going to host the World Equine Games in 2010....1st time it has ever been held outside of Europe...it is the 2cd largest sporting event behind the Olympics....Lexington is doing a fair job of getting ready for the games and getting the infrastructure a go before 2010....but it requires a lot in building, planning, etc....heck, the airport had to go through a renovation just to accommodate the flights that will be coming in.
Not saying New Orleans could not pull it off...but I would have to question it due the the officials still are having troubles getting the city back on its feet from Katrina.
