depends on position. But I would consider anything under 4.5 fast at any position.

Depends on position.

I'd say (for D-1A football): 4.45 or less is fast for WR/DB, 4.5 or less for RB, 4.6 or less for LB and DE, 4.7 or less for TE, 4.8 or less for DT, and 5.0 or less for OL, but that's just my opinion.

I agree with everything else, but I don't know of many DT's that run that. I would say 5.0 or less for them.

Yeah, I thought about it and that's really fast for them big boys. We aren't talking about average (if we were, it'd probably be around 5.1), though, we're talking about those guys that are fast at that position, so I'd say, on second thought, 4.9 or less.

4.5 is suitable for a WR, HB, or CB.
4.6 is suitable for a mobile QB or S.
4.7 or 4.8 is pretty good for a DE or TE.

Sub 4.5 is fast no matter what.

Sub 4.40 is fast. Getting pretty common for guys to run 4.40 +.

No, it really isn't. Most of those times are not accurate. 4.5 is pretty freaking fast, my friend. 4.4 is VERY FAST......

Sub 4.4 is almost unreal. THere are only a handful of guys that can do that legitimately. We are fortunate to have a few on our team.

I agree with this. Look at the best RB's and WR's in NFL history, and very few of them are sub 4.5. If you run a legit 4.5 and are athletic enough, you can play RB, WR, CB and Safety in the Bigs.

In college football speak, sub 4.5 is fast for skill positions.

You won't find many true DE's that run sub 4.6. A scrawny speed rusher/physical freak maybe. 4.6 for a DE is blazing - not just fast.

My girl usually mentions that 2 minutes is a bit fast. She doesn't know shite about football though.

I would pretty much agree with the above but in the Big 10 you would need to add a half second to each position.

Just kidding

First, we need to recognize the difference between speed and quickness.

The 40 time is a measure of quickness - the ability of a player to explode, to accelerate.

There are a lot of WRs, for example, who may have good or great 40 times, but they don't have good times in the 100 meters. That is the measure of speed. That is the extra gear that folks like D. Byrd have that others don't.

They are able to maintain their max speed over a longer distance.

That's why some guys who actually run a 4.5 in the 40 can get dragged down by other guys who run a 4.5. That other guy has the same quickness but greater speed.

For linemen and LBs, guys who won't have to run great distances, you want good 40 times. For RBs and WRs, you want to see if they can turn a good time in the 100 meters as well. Those are your home run threats.
