I haven’t figured out if there’s a method to his madness or vice versa.
May be just a total shitshow by all appearances.

I wonder if the players aren't buying in or something. Are they fragile and don't like his get in your face method? If you read the rant it's all the defense are SJWs' and don't like being yelled at.

the players are buying in. it takes time and talent, both of which we don't have nearly as much as most of you think.

We might (likely?) have a buy in problem. A buy in problem exists when the players don't trust the system, coaching, or calls. It's when a coach says guys, here's the plan, and it's gonna work. And the players mumble under their breath that no, it isn't.
Attitude problems resulting from personality conflicts are a different thing from buy in. Firstly, like a kid with parents, players have (or should have) a certain low-level animosity for coaches. If they don't, they aren't being pushed. But a marathon runner punishes himself physically but still enjoys it. These players may know practice is going to be rough and they know the coaches are going to make sure of that... but it is in their DNA to go do it. It's in their competitive nature.
Secondly, all coaches, especially defensive coaches have an in your face way of doing things. It comes with the job and they learned that way. Even if cajoling it's still aggressive, one on one, and targeted. These players have seen it for years. While their age peers may despise such things, they have been inoculated through herd immunity by years of exposure to the Millenial Disease (when it comes to coaches and the field only). They may gripe... they will gripe. Most do. But the vast majority will still show up and play to win regardless of the griping. That is also in their DNA, to gripe but still go do it. That's the beauty of college sports. When you hear coaches talking about making men or watching them grow up... that's mainly what they are referring to.
But if they don't trust that the coaches are giving them all the tools and putting them in the best position, a.k.a. buy in... it's all for naught. Les had this issue with his OL. When 6 are trying to block 8 with a 9th guy flying in because the predictability is so strong and the keys so easy and all they hear is "do better" and "must execute", you will lose them.
When you hear players start to say "I do everything you say, but it's not working" hit the breaks real fricking hard and reset. You are at a tipping point. That's when buy in and attitude merge (to circle back to the beginning of my post). That's where failure caused lack of buy in and is now causing attitude problems that will lead to 'quit'. But there's no SJW or Millenial influence there. Or getting yelled at. It's a faith, trust, and success equation.

We shouldn’t be this bad. We’re young and inexperienced with a new system, I get that. But what’s going on out there is chaos. We’re never in position. Whatever we do, offenses know exactly where and how to attack. Just look at the 3rd down and 3rd and long success. These are not great offenses doing whatever they want.
I don’t know how to fix it in time to salvage the season, I’m just hoping it gets done somehow. We have enough talent to at least slow people down some.

It’s possible that they just haven’t grasped it yet.
I’m giving them time.

I think this defense has taken a hit, no pun intended, with the targeting rules. Guys aren't afraid to go over the middle of the field anymore.

That has to be a joke. Stingley is considered one of the top overall prospects and he’s not even draft eligible. Besides Flott, every DB is a 4 star +. We got incredibly talented transfers in Cox and Gaye. The talent is 100% there, and the effort hasn’t. Players are running away from tackles, that’s clearly a lack of desire to play in said system.

to believe this you must think our players are non competitive pussies?

Pelini can’t relate to the kids he’s coaching either. He’s old and washed up and stuck in his ways, I don’t mean just football either. I think there is more going on than just what’s happening on the field. It’s obvious.

I've heard about pelini s in your face attitude of old but I'm just not seeing it
I think he calmed with age
I haven't seen it at spring practice or the games.
His system only works if you have an elite d line

quote:definitely seems to be the case. He seems to have toned it down to the average defensive coach. Which is still too much for people outside football.

You know as well as I do, a coach that doesn't criticize, chew arse, nag, and push isn't a coach at all.
If coaches were politicians there would be riots in the streets (oh, wait). If politicians were coaches it would be like southpark's sarcastiball. These are two different worlds; people should stop trying to translate one to the other. That's why practice fields have fences and lockerooms have locks now a days. They're trying to keep the "conventions" of the wider world out. Because it doesn't work on the field or in the lockeroom.
