They don't have a choice. The committee is allegedly unbiased but in reality is not and they choose the moderators. The candidates can either agree to participate or not. They have no input into the selection, although there is a 90% chance the moderators will be more favorable to the Democrats.

Even when there is a conservative leaning moderator that person bends over backwards to appear unbiased. The other moderators have no shame and will moderate totally from the Democrat perspective. They know post debate their peers in the echo chamber won't call them on it and will engage in a full assault on the Republican candidate for every real or imagined transgression. For instance Mike Pence interrupting Kamala Harris, while the disparity in time spoken was only a few seconds. If he had not interrupted her Harris would have had 60% of the talk time. How many times did Susan Page tell Pence he can respond and then she would give him a 20 second time limit. Can you find one time she did the same to Harris?
