Five-star report
quote:
No. 5 Arik Gilbert, TE, LSU
Gilbert made one of the flashiest plays of the weekend on a prayer of a touchdown throw by Myles Brennan. He finished the day with four catches for 37 yards. There were some struggles for Gilbert, particularly as a blocker, where he allowed three QB pressures in six pass blocking snaps, per PFF College.
quote:
No. 14 Eli Ricks, CB, LSU
Ricks played better than you’d think given that LSU gave up 623 passing yards to Mississippi State in Week 1. Finishing with four tackles and an interception, Ricks showed to be LSU’s most dynamic defensive back against a potent Bulldog offense. He allowed only two receptions on five targets, per PFF College, the lowest percentage of any Tiger defender.
quote:
No. 24 Kayshon Boutte, WR, LSU
Despite starting, Boutte ceded many of his snaps to Jaray Jenkins as LSU’s game with Mississippi State went on. Boutte finished with one catch for six yards, while Jenkins caught five passes for 85. Jenkins reeled in all five of his targets while Boutte brought in one of two throws that went his way.

Gilbert should never, ever, be blocking on a pass play unless it’s a screen.

Unless the TE is flexed out wide they'll likely be responsible for a chip block on their way out to their route. Gilbert whiffed on some plays. Freshmen will be freshmen, even 5 star ones.

surprised to hear Ricks only gave up 2 receptions - thought he gave up more for some reason. Granted that TD he gave up was a real bonehead play trying to undercut that. The INT looked like an NFL corner, tho. I think he and Stingley will be the best CB duo by end of the year, which is a weird thing to say about the team that just gave up the most single game passing yards in SEC History.

He was supposed to hand off that coverage to the next defender but no one was there. Ye did make a mistake in undercutting that route and it was his responsibility to double up that coverage when he saw the pass going that way, but it was a blown coverage by the safety.

The fact that Moss could block is what made our offense so lethal.
Gilbert has to do both or he’s a WR.

TEs shouldn't block.

It’s not even that he undercut it, it’s by how much he undercut it. If he’s deeper he actually probably could have picked it off.
I thinj The defense with Ricks and Stingley on the outside is very different.
Flott and Ward cannot play bump and run at this points

Gilbert gets a B-. He's obviously a great receiver but we need to have a plan if he can't even chip a little bit.
Ricks also gets a B-. I thought he handled himself well in his first start. He'll have to be as good or better with Stingley in the lineup, because teams will find ways to attack him.
Boutte was non-existent. He has the physical tools, but is likely behind in the playbook. I would like to see some designs to get the ball in his hands, which we saw none of against Miss St. It may be his time to shine now - dumb the playbook down to give Brennan 1-2 options so he can gain some confidence.

I may be wrong but i thought it was that play. Todd harris played like crap all game and Stevens has never been a good man safety. But sometimes man zone looks like man coverage until you have the handoff to the next level. But if the ball is thrown you are supposed to double up no matter what, thats still your responsibility to help.

Yeah man Gilber is 250 and basically he just had to throw a shoulder into someone’s side.
Which is the most fun you can have blocking as a Te/WR

Did Boutte get concussed?

They showed an aerial view of the play. It was a rub route by the WRs crossing in the middle of the field. Ricks had to reroute closer back to the LOS and did not find the WR after he got diverted.
It was a good play design to create that separation between the WR and CB.
FWIW, I thought he tried to undercut it as well until I saw that aerial view and saw what really happened.

On one play, he was left alone to block the edge rusher, that shouldn’t happen. How dumb of a coaching move is that? His first game and he’s never really had to block. But yea, let’s put him on the edge, with no LT help, and block an SEC defender. Just bad coaching.

I started a thread a couple of weeks ago stressing the importance of Deculus’s ability to pass block and how it could really determine how flexible could be. If he could handle the DE’s rush alone, it would allow Gilbert to line up all over the place rather than having to pass block. Same with the RB—he could motion out wide and go with a no-back set instead of staying in to clean up the OL’s mess.
My thread was downvoted into oblivion. I’m not saying the MSU game vindicated me in that thought because I haven’t seen everybody’s grades. I am curious to see how Deculus and the rest of the line graded out, though. Brennan was terrible—no getting around that. But it appeared the coaching and OL didn’t give him much help.

He ran under another crossing WR, it was designed. He was in good coverage until he ran to ran around the WR and was then too low. It was not him trying to undercut the route. If that was 1 of his 2 receptions, then I would say he played damn well to take that stat along with the pick.
