I've been eating MM since I was a fetus so I still like it for sentimental reasons, but the expansions haven't helped. I preferred it when there were two locations and they were both sketchy af. Now it's all family friendly and shite. It is definitely not the same.

Best pizza in Atlanta during that era was Felini’s in my opinion
Depending on the situation, I do like the NY style slices / order at the counter setup like Felini's as opposed to a sit down pizza place. The NOLA doesn't have many places like this (other than Bourbon St or Pizza Delicious).
People either want a nicer atmosphere with wood-fire/Neapolitan pizza, a family-friendly place with big space, or they want a slice shop with counter service. Mellow Mushroom is none of those things really.

The one near my parents house in Denton is pretty mediocre but the UNT students love it.
Crooked Crust, J&J, TJ’s, and Zalat are better; just off the top of my head.

The one on Oak Street was like the 10th best pizza in a mile radius.
I didn't care for the Mellow Mushroom, and would appreciate knowing the nine better pizzas within that radius.
TIA.

Would like to know the inside story from your friends, being pro-business myself. I think, no matter the market, there will already be established favorites.
I'd like to say that traffic and distance determines where you go for pizza, so maybe it was too far away for many people to be regular patrons. MM here was located right in front of The Grand movie theater. No brainer, right? Didn't blow the doors off. But Zea, right down the street, is never hurting, going to the movies or not, is always busy.
I think MM did a good job of competing against the national chains in many markets, but Laffy had too many excellent local options.

Let’s do lunch one day on my dime. pretty sure we’re about the same age and know lots of the same people here in Lafayette. My gf at USL opened the first coffeehouse in Lafayette - Cappuccino Cafe in Time Plaza around 1991. Another friend Tam (Samurai) was the first to bring sushi to Lafayette. He rented space at Chung King before opening his own restaurant. I was a regular customer of Tam when he worked as a sushi chef in Baton Rouge ~ 1989-1990.
The MM proprietor had lots of $$$ bankrolling him, hence the 3 establishments. Lafayette turned a profit for 3 months. Once the “honeymoon” phase was over with locals, the hemhoraging began and it went downhill fast. My friend was miraculously bailed out of further financial losses when Cvitanovich inquired about buying the building and taking over the lease.
People in Lafayette are extreme loyal to Deano’s, Alesi’s, and Pizza Village. Hard for new competition to succeed, especially the franchises that are not from here.

Yep, now throw in Central and Bread & Circus and MM being in bad location and they fell down the pizza pecking order pretty quickly.

Is the new pizza place that opened at that location open yet?

Under new ownership as Christine sold out last year. The new owners did a remodel and updated the menu. I have no clue about current food quality and service. Rent is probably higher than giraffe balls. I'm not sure how they will survive in an already flooded market.

The one on Oak closed right before Mardi Gras this year. Good for them getting out before Covid. The pizza itself was just not good at all.

Not really anymore in Birmingham. There are 2 locations here, and both appear to do well enough, but I wouldn't say they're huge. Rarely is there a wait for a table at the suburban location, and last time I went to the one close to downtown, it was dead.
Their quality has just gone down hill as they've expanded. It was really good pizza in the late 90's and early 00's when I lived in Atlanta.
The one in Destin was always packed in the early 2000s. Our condo was right next door and we'd walk over from the pool and place a to-go order and sit at the bar and drink while we waited on it. The one in Foley has been good the few times we've been there too. It just seems like ones in larger cities don't do well because of competition.
